THE CITY COUNCIL AND THE RATEPAYERS.
Sir,—l read in your very valuable paper a very'interesting article on "Tho Wealth of huj City," dealing with the council's" tenants or leaseholders. I wonder how these leaseholders will feekwhen the day comes for them to walk out and the city council or their■ chosen friends to.step in to the, properties that- these unfortunate men have spent a fortune and the-best part of a lifetime in making so valuable. 1 know how I would feel if I were in their place. All these men have been heavy ratepayers as well ;as leaseholders. There is also another matter of the very greatest importance to the citizens and ratepayers. That is the vast amount of nonratepaymg properties in this city belonging to the Government, the Harbour Trust and tho City Council itself. I am certain that if you were to publish a complete list and valuation of all ttiese properties in tho same way as you have done with' the city leaseholder's you will confer an everlasting benefit on verv many of your subscribers, who are, like myself, weary and heavily, ladeii ratepayers of this rack-rated citv.—l am, etc.-, UNFORTUNATE RATEPAYER April 4, 1909.
