FEILDING.
At the mooting of tho Feilding Borough' Council on Thursday,-defective-lighting of the borough was again wider discussion. <;■■ Iu dealing with a request from certain ratepayers for a lamp to be placed at tho corner of Derby and Duke Streets, Councillor Goodbohero proposed that the Gas Company bo asked to luy a main to the point, and tho lamp, placed there. Several councillors expressed the opinion that it was hopeless to apply to tho Gas Company, and it was romarked that at tho last meeting of . tho •' council a letter was received from tho Gas Company refusing to oxtend the mains. Councillor Cobbe said the best course would bo for tho council to petition Parliament at the opening shortly, to bring in some' Bill > to' enable corporations to> have agreements with lighting companies cancelled in tho. .event of the arrangements contained in agreements not being carried out. Tho motion asking tho Gas Company to .extend tho mains to the places already applied for wao unanimously carried. The annual-meetineof the Manchester Rifles was held'in the Drill Pall on Thursday evening, there iboing a good attendanoo of members. ■ The showed tho corps to bo.in a good financial position.': Committees were elected as follow:—Management, Col.-Sorgt. Aitkon, Sergts. Havdon 1 and Jones, Ptes. Bolk, Evans, and Mayhew, and Bugler Fisher. The chairman reported that Lieut. Pleasants hadbeen compelled, through ill-health, to resign his commission,-, and had applied to be placed on the Active'; UnattachodList. It was resolved that a vote of sympathy, coupled.with thanks' for .his long service to the. corps, i be tendered to Lieut. Pleasants. ..' . .'_ .■., - ,-'. Thursday.night's meeting was the last of , the present Borough Council, and: after th« business had been disposed of, some valodiodictory speeches wore delivered. ' The Mayor thanked tho members'of the Council for tho rapport thoy had given him, and 1 stated that whotjior in or out of the council host year, he would- do his best : for the interests of the borough. Ho tendered hia thanks to Mr; J. Rankin for tho valuable assistance'he'had always rendered, and hoped tho Town' Clerk would soon bo'quitb well, and bo long spared to carry on the work of tho • borough. Mr. Tong, the assistant', had:also carried.on his.duties in a very satisfactory manner'. Tho Mayor added / that he had criticised'the engineer occasionally, but it was not through animosity'. Ho hoped Mr. Rocho ,' would, be .able to finish tho'large works of .'the borough satisfactorily. Councillors Cobbe, Goodbehere, and Atkinson, also spoke.-
