SHIELD COES TO CANTERBURY. INTERESTING,.CONTESTS. ' About 1200 people assembled; at the Basin • Reserve yesterday to'witness, the contests in connection with tho eighth annual inter- ' Varsity athletic championships, . The spectators included a largo proportion of members . of tho fair sex, who took a keen interest in tho various events. On the whole, tho fields • were fairly numerous, , and competition was distinctly, good. Tho track, 1 which improved as tho day advanced, was in fair , order, but it was "bumpy in places, and tho grass was too .long. By gaining most points, Canterbury College secured the shield for tho fourth time. . One now record —in connection with the mile flat-pwas created; the previous , best performance for tho 120 yards hurdles was equalled; tho record' for .the' 100 yards was broken, but tho now record was not allowed owing to'the fact that the raco was run with the- wind; and tho best previous performance for-the mile walk was eclipsed. ' Tho Score Sheet. ■Following is ; tho list of points'in connec- « fcion with each event :— v ■ ■ ■•■■ • ■ ■.■•-,'■

Success of the Canterbury "Flyer." / Among the oompotitors were several. ath- ( lctes who took part at the recent N.Z.A'.A.A. ■ championship meeting; ( Of the performers, none attracted more attention than Opie, tho Canterbury "flyer," who had, run second in the JOO yards and 220 yards championships to , the Wellington crack Woodger. Compared with Woodgor, tho southern runner is shorter ind 'more; sturdily bnilt. If anything, ho appeared to get off tho mark quicker than the local champion.is, , wont to do. In his events yesterday he* shot away early, in the race, and maintained such'a hot pace that his opponents were unable, to-raluco tho gap. His time- for the 220 yards championship, in ■which there woro. eight starters, was 23 4-5 nee, which is only 1-5 of ! a second slower than the university record. Opio was next seen in the 100; yards championship, for which'there were sevon competitors. His time, 10 l:ssec., was better.than tho previous/host perform-, ance, but-no record-was allowed as he had' the advantage of tho .wind. Then, again, in the 440. yards flat Opie had.no difficulty ~in' winning: from fonr other' competitors in63sec:, which is creditablo time. The Canterbury sprinter also assisted his side in the relay race, when he again,; showed a fine turn of speed. . ... -Dougall Breaks a-Recprd. Of the other, none was more popular than L." A. Dougall, the Canterbury College long-distance champion. Tall , and well developed, Dougall . showed that he could cov«r tho ground speedily with littlo effort.. It. is stated that, trials with Guy. Haskins lately havo improved him consider-i ably. In the mile race ho won as ho liked in' the record time of 4min. 36 3-ssec.—3 i-Sseo. faster than the. previous' best performance. His next appearanco was in the'half-mile championship, which ho accounted for in 2min. 6sec., after a grand spurt. In the three-mile race he met Bigg the champion in 1908. To tno disappointment of . tho •- spectators, Dougall, who had made the pace,. dropped out at tho end of two miles, just when RigK had got on level terms with him. Dougall also took part in tho relay race. Conspicuous Local competitors. Most conspicuous among- the local competitors were A. H. Bogle, A. T. Duiican, and £. Rigg. In tho 120 yards hurdles Bogle's time equalled thoprovious'best performance, viz.} 17 1-qsec. .Bogle again \ displayed his ability at hurdling over tho quarter-mile, which he was fortunate. to, win.- In the ; broad jump he gained second place with a meritorious effort. Duncan came second to 'Opio in the 100 yards, 220-yards, and 440 yards—a fine -record—besides assisting his college to sccuro second place in tho relay race. • Although ho had to be content to tnko second placo to Dougall in the mile, which, as before mentioned, was done in record time, Kigg turned tables on the southern champion in the three milo race,' which ho won in ISmin. oGsec, or 13sec. slower than thetimo which ho took to do tho distance on tho oc- ■ casion of tho Catholic Club's recent sports. ■ List of Offiolals.
