THE MAYORALTY.

MR. BOLTON'S CANDIDATURE. Two open-air meetings wcro addressed by Mr. l'\ G. Bolton, candidato for the city mayoralty, 011 Saturday nMit, ono at Riddiford Street, Newtown, and 0110 at 1 the Royal Oak Hotel corner. _ Tjio candidate dealt at length with tho subject of municipal markets for tho sale of fish, fruit, and vegetables, advocating the institution of such a. market upon an economical basis at first to test its success. Tho site of suoli a market, he urged, should be as nearly as'possible central, lmt not necessarily in a main thoroughfare, provided it was adjacent to the tram route. Whilo ■ not absolutely committing himself to one particular site, it scorned to him that ono could be had at a moderate cost by clearing away tho properties in Haining Street. Land would there be provided at probably the cheapest possiblo price. Any building erected for tho market on the sito purchased could be of corrugated iron, with accommodation for n smnll number of stalls to commence with, and, if tho demand increased, moro stalls could be built. Personally, he had no doubt about tho success of a market on such lines, but if it moved a failure the land could ho resold for factory sites, and tho corporation would probably gain 011 tho resale. At each meeting tlifl candidate wa3 accorded unanimous votes of thanks nnd confidence. EASTBOURNE. The mayoral campaign of Eastbourne was oommonced 011 Saturday nifrht, when Mr. John Bai'r addressed a meeting at East- ! bourne School. Mr. John Danks cccu» pica tho chair. In_ commencing his address, Mr. Barr emphasised tho need for having as mavor a man who knew how local affairs should be managed, and did not have to experiment at the expense of the ratepayers. In Newtown, Lower Hutt, and Eastbourne, ho had assisted m securing advantages much needed by the people, and lie had gained exnerience in tho United Kingdom, U.S.A., and" Canada. The candidate reviewed the career of the borough since it had been separated from tho Hutt County Council. There were a few practical men on the present Borough Council, 110 said, but yet the neople had to ask themselves whether they had received full value for the money spent to date, almost £6700, Wlion the borough was formed thcro were many things to bo dono, including road formation water supply, drainage, lighting, and sanitary arrangements, and most of this yet remained to bo done. Seeing that so little had been done, surely thoy should not be highly rated. At present many residents had to pay as much for sanitary service, etc as they did for rates. liorrowiim and speiidinc at the rate which had obtained in tho past could not continue, or else all their rates would be swallowed up by interest on loans ihe estimated revenue for this year wa« -Pfm plus £258 from the Hutt County cL no il Of this amount about £400 had already cone 111 overdraft, leaving about" £638,' which would bo used- for interest, charitable aid administration, and other fixed charges If tho incidental expenses amounted to as much as in tho previous year there would bo n leficit of something like £103, so tint it was clear that some chan-e must take place Afto>' questions had been answered tho candidate was 011 the motion of Mr Button seconded by Mr. J.
