FIELD AND STREAM,

(Bt Dnr Fly,) Fishing continues te bo good, tho streams boing in first-class order. At Wainui-o-mata last week, Dr. Pigeon got 11 trout, averaging Jib. each. Several other baskets we-ro secured from the samo stream. Limit bags have been out of the question for several weeks, but last Sunday, notwithstanding the hard northerly blowing, two anglers got 20 fish each at South Karon. Tho fish were on the small sido. Many have tried their luck in tho Orongo Orongo Stream, without reward. Mr. Pritohard fished the lower waters of it last Sunday, and secured eight fine sea-run trout ranging from 21b. to 2Jlb. each. There is very littlo fishablc water in the lower portion of the stream, which is easily reached from the month of tho Wainui. Here is a fishing story from tho reminiscences of Mr. W. B. Woodgato, the old Oxford athlete oarsman and all-round sportsman:—Tho moat was sheltered; not a ripplo of wind could rufflo more than two sidos of tho square, and very littlo of that. The normal drop of a gut cast, however light, was visible to the fish, and scared them. Mrs. Farmer had a remedy. Sho sent a boy to bring half a dozen yellow duckling from tho homestead. I'heso wore placed in tho moat, and tli© boy told off to watch gently ahead of thom, checking thoir retreat by aid of a long, pea-stick. Hound and round tho moat the ducklings swam to avoid me and my line. Their ripple obfuscated the water, and trout roso freely in their wake. And hero is another for shooters:—l om not a great shot, but I once made a record shot. ... I was left-hand gun. A haro got up to the left in "second crop" white clover. I killed her; a covey rose, and I dropped a bird with my second barrel. When we came to pick up tho haro another brace and a half of birds woro dead or dying beside her. She had been running by the covey when the shot struck her. The birds, packed close, had boon cut up by tho surplus charge. Three birds and ono hare for ono barrel. My Erskine friends gibed for years at the shot, as tho worst case of poaching evor known on the estate.
