TBorn at Cracow,- Poland, on October 12, 1844, and educated in a Catholic Convent at Cracow, Madame Helena.Modjeska-Chlapowska irado'lier debut at Bochnia, Tclnnd, in 1801. Her first appearance* in English was at San Francisco -n 1877, and she subsequently returned to the Unitel States after two Lcndon engagements She played leading Shakespearean parts, CamiU", Mary Stuart, and others. In her earlie:' days in Poland she was principally known as a light comedy actress and vocalist. She was a woman of great culture and personal charm, with strong political views which brought her under suspicion iuher own country, to which her return was officially debarred.!
