Borchgrevink, leader of the 1898-1000 Antarctic, expedition, will start for tho Antarctic this year. BORCHGREVINK'S RECORD. Mr. C. E. Borchgrevink was born at ChrMiania in 18M,-of a. Norwegian father and an Enelish mother. In 1888 he emigrated to Australia, and' worked for six years as a' surveyor in Queensland and New South Wale?. For two years ho taught languages and natural science at Cooerwull. N*v,- South Wales, and in 189J he ventured into the Antarctic on a whaler. It is recorded that ho was the first to land at Capo Adair, on th« Southern Continent, on February -23, 1895.' In 189S he led forth the exnedition that attained, on March 17, 1900, til's then farthest sonr.h, 78 degress SO minutes. (Lieut. Shackleton's farthest south is 88 degrees £3 minutes.) The expedition also fixed an approximate position for--thn Magnetic Pole, since definitely located.bv-Mr. Jlawson. a member of Professor David's section of Shaclcleton's partv. Mr. Borchgrevink, who worked by way of Victoria Land, re'.mnwd to Stewart Island on. April 4, 1900. It is not clear from what point ho will attack thn 'Antarctic this time. Dr. Bruce will work from the South Atlantic, via Coats's Land.
