Mr. Hamilton Mackenzie Douglas, of Levin, was admitted to practice as a solicitor of the Supreme Court yesterday, by Mr. Justice Chapman, on the motion of Mr. Blair. Miss Florence Baines, tho talented singing comedienne, has bee-n successfully operated upon in Dunedin for an affection of tho throat. Her voice is unimpaired. After a brief season at Easter in Christchurch, Miss Baines leavee for America. Mr. Paul Cinquevalli, the world-renowned .juggler and balancer, was married on March 29 to Miss Dora Knowles, an English lady. Tho ceremony took'place at Wendovor, Sydney. Mr. and Mrs. Cinquevalli are at present in Dunedin with , tho Harry Rickarde Vaudevillo Company. Mr. A. Russell, who has been Foreman of Works at Lyttelton for the last seven' years, and who has been appointed borough engineer at Wanganui, was presented on' Saturday with a set of text-books on municipal, engineering by the members of the executive staff of tho Lytteltou Borough Council. Mr. G. A. Lowin, Town Clork of Lyttelton, mado the presentation." Tho Hon. A. T. Ngata goes to Taupo tomorrow to attend the Native Conference which has been organised by Mr. To Houheu Tukino. Ritchie, Secrotary of Agriculture, who has boon appointed to tho position of Inspector and Chairman of the Land Purchase Board, will leave soon 'on a six months' visit to England. Mackenzie, told a Christclmrch reporter that tho Goyernmont intended to appoint a Secretary i'or Agriculture, to fill tho position vacated by Mr. Ritchie, but it had not yet been .decided who would ho appointed. " i ■ ■ "; •;_;; Tlio Rov. R. H. Hobday was instituted as first vicar of tho parochial district of Brooklyn in the Anglican Church, Brooklyn, last evening. Tho institution was performed by the Ven. Archdeacon Fancourt, in the absence, through the indisposition of tho Bishop, Tho ■Rov. R. H. Hobday read the service, and an address was given by the archdeacon. A large local choir was augmented for. the occasion by a number of choristers from St. Peter's, of which parish Brooklyn was previously a portion. Mr. Hobday, was formerly at Chelsea, London, and Southam, Sussex." Ho came to New Zealand' about twelve months ago, and was acting curato of St. Peter's for a space of three months last year. v Mr. R. P. Clarksou, who was drowned at Napier on Saturday, was 39 years of age and a widower, his wife having died at Normanby some three years ago. Ho was educated at Christchurch High School, and 'matriculated ■at Canterbury College, subsequently taking his M.A. degree there. After occupying the position of assistant master at different schools in Canterbury and at Palmcrston North, he was appointed headmaster at Normanby, where ho resided for many years. In May last he was appointed Superintendent of tho Napier "technical School, and later on Director of . Technical Education in tho board's district. While in Christchurcli, Mr. Clarkson was an enthusiastic cyclist, but of recent years ho had given undivided attention to his profession, and during the brief period bo had been in Napier had done splendid work there. Hβ was a brother of Mr. J. B. Clarkson, of Palmerston North, Mr. W. Clarkson, of Fcilding, and Mr. T. Clarkson,. editor of the Gisborno "Times." Our Palmerston North correspondent states that, prior to the meeting of tho Borough Council Inst evening, ox-Superin-tendent Tingey, of the Palmorston Firo Brigade, received several presentations in recognition of his twenty-five years' servico in the town. The Mayor presided, and there was a large attendance of citizens. The superintendent was first presented with .the gold star of the United Fire Brigades' Association for 2f) years' service. On behalf of the residents of the town, lie was given a gold watch-chain and pendant, and t« Mrs. Tingey, on behalf of the townspeople-, ii silver ogg-stand was presented. Superintendent Tingey also received from the brigadetho trophies won by it during his term of office, those including a massive silver cup u'on at L'alinerston North, and a handsome salad bowl won at tho Napier Fire Bri. gndes' Demonstration. Complimentary reference was made- to Superintendent Tingcy's work by the Mayor, Mr. D. Buick, M.P., Councillor liaydon and Mr. Park. Later in the proceedings, Mr. L. G. West, an t'.v-ciiptfliii of the brigade, took advantage of the occasion to present Superintendent Tingey with a scrap-book, containing publishtd nnd -minute details of tho brigade since its formation iu tho early eighties.
