COOKS AND WAITERS' UNION.
The monthly meeting of the Cooks' and Waiters' Union was held Inst night, when declaration was made of the poll for president. Of the two candidates, Messrs. E. Mark and S. Smith, Mr. Mark was declared elected by a large majority. \ A ballot on the proposal to take ten shares in the proposed Labour paper took place, and the proposal was carried by 220 • votes to 17. Letters were received from" tho Auckland and Christchurch Unions stating their inability to be represented at a conference during Easter week, and suggesting that a proposal be submitted to each union by the Wellington body for the federation of hotel workers' unions, the proposal to be consummated at a meeting at the end of May. Correspondence was read from the Labour Department in reference to alleged breaches of award by employers. The secretary rtported that lately there had been a decrease in number of such alleged offences. The secretary stated that'the office of the union was fast becoming a free labour agency During the past month he had been successful in finding 80 situations.
