As Easter draws near thoso w.'io look forward to tho time as ono of festivity and holiday-making begin to plan and proparo for whatever ovonts aro to occupy the days of this short but time-honoured vacation. An additional subject for conversation is provided as soon as tho conventional topic— tho general state of tho weather—has boon oxhaustod, for then tho talk approaches things with moro extremo definition, and tho question is: Do you think it is going to bo lino for Easter? A wet Easter is not by any moans an unusual tiling in Wellington, but despito previous disappointments, peoplo continuo to niako plans with tho knowledge over present that tlioy aro liable to bo broken like an Easter ogg. Tho holidays eommenco on Good Friday, April 9, aiul n number of special church services will be held, but most of tho fixtures are arranged for tho day following. A number of football teams will journey to tho country to play matches with provincial clubs, and get into something like form for tho approaching season. Friday will bo tho opening day for tho bowling tournament, which will bo continued on Saturday and Monday. Rifle Clubs _ and volunteers will also havo a busy timo. Tho martial ovonts will include Garrison Artillery practice at Fort Ballnnce, infantry anil mounted troop manoeuvres at Oring'i, and a riflo club field meeting at Palmerston North. A young men's Christian camp will bo held at Palmerston Noitli. On Saturday pleasure-making will start in earnest. In addition to a number of sporting and picnic fixtures, a commencement will bo mado with the university tournamont and tennis championships. A civic reception will bo tendered to tho university students during tho day, and, in the evening, tho tournament debate will tako placo in tho Concert Chamber of tho Town Hall. Tho conference of Federated Catholic Clubs will also opon at St. Patrick's Hall, in Boulcott Street. Town dwellers desiring a cliango in tho country will havo tho opportunity of visiting Waibanac, wliero an atlilotic sports mooting will tako placo. A pony raco meeting will bo held at Miramar, and tho first day of tho Wairarapa Racing Club will bo held at Tauhercnikau. For the evening, attractions will bo numerous and varied. Two moving-picture entertainments are promised, while a treat to lovers of comic opera will be afforded by the opening of J. C. Williamson's present season with "Tho Merry Widow" billed as the attraction. Those who favour melodrama will havo their wants supplied by the Edwin Goach Dramatic Company, which will open a season at tho Thcatro Royal with " Tho Woman Pays." Sunday will bo devoted to tho usual special Easter sorvices in the churches, and at San' Antonio, Muritai, Catholic graduates and undergraduates will hold a religious conference and social reunion, _ The university tournament will be continued on Monday, tho day's fixtures including tho athlotio championship meeting, and a picnic and concert at Day's Bay. Monday will also bo the first day of the Feilding Jockoy Club's meeting. Wlion Tuesday comes round tho majority of tho holiday-makers will either havo returned, or will bo returning to arduous toil, but there will still bo a lucky few who can afford to let work slip for another day. This day will witness tho' finalo of the tennis championship mooting, and tho wind-up of tho university tournament, of which event tho university ball will bo tho last item. A conferenco of delegates representing Chambers of Commerce throughout tho Dominion will commence on Wednesday.
