RETIRING FROM THE PUBLIC SERVICE.

Napier, April 1. Mr. Flannery, gaolor of Napier Prison, who is retiring from the public scrvico on superannuation, was to-day presented with an address from thp citizens. The Mayor (Mr. J. Vigor Brow'n ; M.P.) presided, and there was a representative gathering of townspeople. Tho Mayor said that tho citizens felt they could not let Mr, Flannery retire from the public servico without giving him somo memento of tho manner in which bo had carried out his duties. Mr. Flannery had held a position in the public service for 46 years. It was generally regretted that ho was leaving tho service, nnd although he was 72 years of ago, there were many men of 50 or 60 not as active as ho was. ALLEGED BREACHES OF AWARD. Auckland, April 1. Several claims for breaches of awards under tho Arbitration Act wero made to-day. Tho inspector asked for a; penalty of £10 against Bond Bros., timber merchants, of Devonport, for having employed Frank Boldero, a youth, as timber worker, at os. lOd. per day instead of 7s. It was shown that a certificate of incompetency had been issued in respect to Boldero, but had been allowed to lapse. On defendants promising to renew tho certificate a nominal fine of ss. was imposed. Duncan Simpson, painter, who stated he had employed a nephew upon arrival from England, as an ae*t of charity, at the Tato of 9d. per hour, instead of Is. 3d., was fined 10s.

CHRISTCHURCH SHIP CANAL. Chrlstchurch, April 1. At tho next mooting of tho City Council the Mayor will move that a committee bo appointed to consider and report what steps should bo taken by the council to introduce into Parliament next session a Bill providing for moro equitable city representation on tho Lyttolton Harbour Board, and for taking a poll of ratepayers to determine whether e ship canal from Sumner to tho city should ho started. DEATH AT SEA. Invercargill, April 1. Captain Macßrido, of tho Jessie Nicoll, which has just returned from tho Macquarios, reports that Mr. Dutton, second officer, died during tho passage. Deceased, who contracted malaria whilo in Manila, had been ordered to a colder climate, aud joined tho Jessie Nicoll eight weeks ago. He is a son of tho Rev. Mr. Button, of Duncdin. Tho Customs will hold a Departmental inquiry. ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION. Dunedln, April 1. At the meeting of the Otago Centre of tho New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association this evening, Messrs. W. H. Pollock and A. Marryatt were elected Otago delegates on tho new council. It was stated that tho profits pver the recent championship meeting at Dunedin would bo between £55 and £CO. It is stated that tho heavy ram on Tuesday was less heavy than during tho flood of 1885, but it has been pointed out that though in 1885 seven inches of rain fell in 26 hours, 4.27 inches fell on Tuesday in less than six hours—over double the volume of water that fell during a like period in 1885. DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER. Dunedin, April 1. Mr. James Steele, of Oamaru, died suddenly at Alexandra last night.
