FOOTBALL GROUNDS. The special committee of the Petone Borough Council—the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), ami Councillors Short, Custle, and Smith—:-et up a week ago to allot football grounds t'or the present season, met last evening in the Mayor's room. The committee had to consider, on the one hand, Iho oiler nf .tlli'2 10s. made by the Wellington Rugby Football Union for tho use of the four grounds on the Recreation Reserve, and, on tho other, the representations of the deputation from JY'tono Association Football Club, who asked for ono or more of tho availablo grounds. Tho eommitteo last evening took into consideration tho fact that the local Association football club numbered this season over 70 members, and decided that -the W.R.F.U. should bo olTored not more than three grounds. Tho resolution of tho eommitteo was that grounds N"os. I, 2, and be offered to the W.R.F.U. for tho season for .1:105, the union to have also the whole of the gate receipts. Is'o. I ground is to he reserved for tho football Association, nt a rental to be agreed upon. Provision will be mado that tho Association match may, under soino circumstances, be played on a ground other than No. 4. In the event of a Brown Shield match being allotted to Pelone, it may bo so arranged that it can bo played on No. I—tho oval, and admittedly tho best football ground on tho reserve. However, arrangements snob as this are left entirely to the W.R.F.U. and tho W.F.A., who must mutually agree. This is looked upon as the final decision of tho council, and if tho Rugby Union does not agree to tho proposed terms, it is considered probable that no Rugby matches will bo played this year on the Petono Recreation Ground. JOTTINGS. * Not to ho put off by the intermittent showers yesterday, Petono hockey players had a practice on the Recreation Ground. The match with tho Wellington representatives had to bo abandoned, however. It has been arranged to hold a match, Wednesday v. Saturday teams, on Good Friday. Arrangements havo been made by tho Petone Association Football Club to send a team to Masterton for a match on Easter Monday. Owing to the Easter holidays, the next meetings of Lower Hutc and Petone Borough Councils have been postponed until Wednesday, April 14.
As the result of yesterday's heavy rain, the Hutt River continues to rise steadily.
