Gauthier, master of tho French ship Admiral Cccille, has (according to tho "Railway and Marine Ncwb") . reported three unusual voyages from Hobart, Tasmania, to Puget Sound. In September, 1905, tho Admiral Cecille left Hobart, and it was the intention of the master to sail to tho ■ south of New Zealand, a usual route, but unfavourable winds caused a decision to go north. Cape Oton, in New Zealand, was mado in six days, and from the north of New Zealand a routo was taken towards the Cook Inlets, Penrhyn, forty miles east. of Garden Island and thirty miles west'of .'Christmas Island, thence on a practically direct line to Cape Flattery, at tho entrance to Puget Sound. This route saved a considerable distance, and the full voyage was traversed in the unusually fast time of forty-seven days. Two subsequent voyages over the same general course were made respectively in September, 1907, and September, 1908. In the postscript of his report to the hydrographic office, the captain of, the Admiral Cecille writes:—"l desire to call, attention of navigators, if those routes should becomß more goneral, to tho dangers which are presented by the cliff 'Bast des frigates Franchises.' I found mysojf in a very , dangerous position here, September 21, at daybreak, on account of the wrong position of this cliff on, the chart, of which I have advised the officials in Paris. Tho most active watch could not discover tho approach of danger. The breakers were running in an immense expanse. This cliff is'very dangerous on all sides; at tho west end the current and the north-east wind can drive a ship upon it at night. On the south end the sea is so shallow that it does not even break the reefs."
The TJnion Company's collier Kaituna Is to leave Westport for Wellington this morning. Mr. G. H. Scales has received cabled ndvice that his chartered steamer Clan Ogilvy arrived at Edithburg on Monday. Good progress is being made with the repairs to tho Huddart-Parkor Bteamer TJlimaroa, now in dock at Lyttelton. Several plates have already been replaced. It is understood that Captain Jordon, of the Navua, is to transfer to the Maitai, while Captain Dawson, at present in command of tho latter, comes to Wellington for orders. An English paper states that the schooner Valhalla, in which Lord Crawford has cruised two hundred thousand miles, has been sold to a shipbroker's firm in New York. She is destined for the United States as a mercantile training ship. Tho coastal steamer Cygnet, which is relieving tho Wakatu in the Wcllington-Lyttelton, via coast, trade,' arrived in port yesterday afternoon. She was unable to work Kaikoura on the voyage up, in consequence of the heavy sea running. Messrs. Levin and Co. have received advice that the steamer Yeddo left San Francisco for Auckland on March 15, laden with a miscellaneous cargo. She is due at Auckland on April 10. . . The New Zealand Shipping Company's chartered steamor Buteshire arrived at YVaitara yesterday afternoon, and, after some inward loading there, she proceeds to Wellington. She afterwards calls at Auckland, Napier, and Lyttelton, and is due to leave the last-named port for London about April 22. Monday's heavy weather interfered with loading operations on the Shaw, Saville, and Albion Company's steamer Corinthic. but she was taken over to Glasgow Wharf early yesterday morning, where a quantity of hemp and frozen meat was shipped, and in the afternoon .she left for Lyttelton, where the remainder of her London cargo will be discharged.
