GOOD RAINFALL.
A rainfall bf 1J inches (1.72) occurred in WeUingten during the , gale of Monday night, and a rainfall of greater or less volume occurred at tho same time in other parts of the Dominion. The rain' will have been heartily welcomed by farmers, and, as the harvests are past, the damage by wind can have been but slight, There was need ot ram this month, for sub-soils everywhere were dry, although light showers had moistened tho grass. The rainfall during the three months of the present year, including Monday's storm, has been as follows-— January, 3.06 inches; February, 2.99 inchesMarch, 3.60 inches. The beneQt from the 172 tons of rain per aero which fell on Monday night will be enjoyed chiefly by the dairy farmers, to whom it will mean a further extension of this prolific dairying season. Tho gale which brought the rain was of great severity, surpassing that of tie storm which wrecked the Penguin. It was pre-' ceded and followed by an extensive area of humid atmosphere. It struck the whole of the Bast Coast and benefited tho farm lands in its course. The West Coast also benented to a smaller degree. In any parts where ploughing has been deferred on account of the hardness of the soil, there should now be a quickening of activities and a rapid seeding of catch crops for the winter and spring.
