"Statistics'' (Otaki).—Lutteur 111. is tho only French horse that has yet won the Liverpool Grand National. Gladiateur, v;bo won tlio Epsom Derby in 18G5, is tho only French horso to win that event. NEW ZEALAND RACINC CONFERENCE. APPEAL BOARD JUDGMENTS. Tho judges appointed by the New Zealand Racing Conference to .hear tlio appeals iu connection with disqualifications imposed by tho Avondalo Jockey Club delivered judgment yesterday as follows:— AUCKLAND RAILWAY HANDICAP. This was an appeal of the trustees of the late Mrs. Coombes against a decision of the Auckland Racing Club refusing their application to disqualify Royal Soult for tho Railway Handicap, on tlio grounds that ho was at tho time of such race a disqualified horse. Judgment: Wo aro of opinion that llulo 8 of Part XXXI of the Rules of Racing establishes' clearly the right of Royal Soult to start at tho Auckland summer meeting during the pendency of an appeal to tho Metropolitan Committee. We therefore confirm the decisjon of the Auckland Racing Club, and dismiss tho appeal now before us. Regarding this appeal as absolutely groundless, we order the deposit to bo forfeited. THE LUCIO CASE. This was an appeal of George Pell and Albert Whittaker against a decision of tho Auckland Metropolitan Committee, who endorsed a decision of the Avondalo Jockey Club disqualifying George Pell for twelve months and Albert Whittaker for two years, in connection with tho ridinjj of the horso Lucio at tho Avondalo meeting in September, 1903. Judgment: Tho judges liavo considered tho abovo eases together, as they are both connected with tho running of the horso Lucio. They can see no reason for reversing tho decision of tlio Avondalo JockJy Club arrived at by officials who witnessed tho riding of tho two jockeys, inasmuch as no facts have since been olicited which seem to tho judges to justify the reversal of such decision or of its subsequent confirmation by tho Metropolitan Committee. Tho judges consider that tho sentences upon tho jockeys Geovgo Pell and Albert Whittaker should bo uniform, and therefore disqualify eacJi of them for twelve months from December 18, 1908. The judges regard tho evidence offered by Norman Cunningham as proving that ho is unfit to be licensed as a trainer. They consider that his present license should be cancelled, and that no licenso should be issued to him by any Metropolitan Club for a term of fivo years. Tho judges direct that tho deposits of George Pell and Albert Whittaker be refunded. THE ROYAL SOULT CASE. This was an appeal of S. G. Lindsay and Mark Ryan against a decision of tho Auckland Metropolitan Committee, who ondorsod a decision of tho Avondalo Jockey Club disqualifying them, with tho horso Royal Soult, for two years in connection with tho running at the Avondalo meeting in September, 1908. The judges adjourned tho hearing of this case for the production of further, evidence. Without in any way indicating an . opinion upon the case, but solely to guard against any possible injustice, they direct that tho disqualification of Mark Ryan bo suspended and inoperative from this date until tho final hearing. (Signed) GEORGE CLIFFORD, J. W. ABBOTT, GEO. HUNTER, Judges. BROOD MARES FOR SYDNEY SALES. It is a very higli-class lot of thoroughbred mares that Mr. I. G. Duncan has decided to send to Sydney for the Easter sales,, and, taking into consideration the high prices given by Australian buyers for brood mares at tho Yaldliurst sale last August, there should be keen bidding at Randwick for those from Waikanae. Arrangements have been made for tho mares to bo railed down from Waikanae on Thursday morning, April 8, and they will leavo for Sydney tho sumo evening by tho Manuka, in cliarge of A. Cochrane. Tho shipment will comprise tho following lotsAstolat (Roval Artillery —Bellicent), in foal to Charlemagne II.; Petticoat (Multiform—Bloomer), in foal to Achilles; Berenice (Daunt—Flattery), in foal to Conqueror; Jemima (Stopniak— Clauvina), in foal to Mahaki; Tamarind IP- Officer Thame), in foal to Kilcheran; Delhi (St. Andrew—Delft), in foal to Kileheran; Voromquo (The Officer—Bequest), in foal to Achilles; La Gloria (St. Leger—Chal'onte), in foal to Charlemagno II.; Lady Maudo (Grafton—Aureole), in foal to Sir Laddo; Ringlet (Castor—Bangle); and Bonnette (Conquer—Stephanotis). Ringlet and Lonnetto foaled late and wero not served. NOTES AND COMMENTS. Tho Autumn meeting of the Mastexton Racing Club takes placo on Thursday and rriday. . Si / ,4, ri l§ al llas al re=dy arrived at Ellorslie to fulfil his engagements at tho Auckland Racing Club's Autumn meeting. By the Maheno, which left for Sydney on Friday last, Mr. J. B. lleid, of Canterbury, shipped tho brood mares Court Beauty (Royal Artillery—Tres Belle) and Santita (Saut Ilario—Seasbell) for salo in Sydncv. Tho hurdle races at tho Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting have only attracted half a dozen entries. A number of Trentbam horses leave for Masterton w-day, in order to fulfil their engagements on Thursday and Friday. It is expoctod that tho recent Autumn meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club will result in a substantial profit. Sir Goo. Clifford has sold tho two-year-old colt Applegarth (Treadmill—Goldleaf) to an Australian breeder. Applegarth is a brother iu blood to tho dual . Dorby winner, Husbandman. Kremlin is now owned bv Mr. C. Thedo, owner of Loch Fyne. Tho'Stopniak gelding has recently joined W. Mobborly's team at Ellerslic, and is to be prepared for winter racing. Tho Duncdin Cup winner, Prim, was vory lame after a gallop at Riccarton on Friday morning, and it is considered unlikely that, tho Pilgrim's Progress filly will soe tlio uost in tho Great Autumn Handicap. Weights for the minor ovonis on tho first day of the Auckland Racing Club's Autumn meeting aro duo to appear to-day. Bookmakers wishing to tot at tho Miramax- Pony Races on Saturday next may obtain licenses up till Friday afternoon. Tho veteran Auckland jockey, Frank Burns, who, it was thought, had retired from the saddle, recently, obtained a licenso from tlio Auckland Racing Club, and was riding at a race meeting at Opotiki. lie had eight mounts, riding five winners, two seconds, and a third. Mr. I. G. Duncan recently purchased tho brood mare Purity, by The Oliiccr from the Oaks winner Enid (dam of tho Oaks winner Bclliocnt, and granddam of auother Oaks ■ winner, Isolt), Parity. haß a foal at foot by
Sir Lnddo, and is in foal to Birkonhead. Last Dcecnijwr her colt foal by Sir Laddo realised top price at the Manawatu Stud Company's sale of yearlings. There have Imxmi nine starters in tbo last two contests for tho Waipipi Cup, nin at tho autumn meeting of the Masterton Racing Club, but for Thursday's race only eight horses have made the acceptance. Tlicso include Moloch (Wellington" Cup), Waipaku (Ashlnirst Cup), Tangeroa, Maiora, Whetumarania-, and other good performers, so that tlie.ro is promiso of a first-class contest. Full Rate's full sister, Kimmcrian,' who ran second to Aborbrothock in, a hack race at tho Dannevirko meeting, figures among Hie entries for tho Maiden Hack Race at Opaki on Tliursday. When tlio weights for tho minor events at tho Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting are declared, it will bo interesting to eoo how Mr. Henrys will treat Morrio Zealand. The last a.ppearanco of the Morrio England gelding was at tho Woodville Cup meeting, when he carried top weight, 9st. 91b., and was beaten a neck by Silken Rein, who carried Bst. 111b. Silken Rein afterwards raced at tho Daimeyirko meeting, where she easily won the Kaitoko Welter with 9st. in the saddle. Tho Australian Jockey Club continues to increaso tho amount allotted in pri7Xs money, and at the next spring meeting owners wall have- an additional £1000 to race for each day. The reduction in the distance of tlio hurdle races may lead to better entries for those events. Probably the distance of the Randwick Plate was reduced because two miles and a quarter is rather far for three-year-olds to race eo early in the season. Over a two-mile course horses of that age should havo a better show with their elder rivals.
