MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
THE BOROUGH COUNCILS. EASTBOURNE. A meeting of ratepayers of the Eastbourne Borough was hold in the schoolroom on Saturday night, for tho purpose, so tho advertisement convening it stated, of discussing the question of Mayor and councillors for tho borough. Mr. Russell was voted to the chair, and be called on the promoter to explain the object of tho meeting and submit a. motion. ' Mr. Coombe thereupon explained tho reasons why he, with a fow others, had convened the gathering. They wished to infusesome new blood into tho body entrusted with tho management of the borough's affairs. He moved to the effect that Mr. John Banbe asked to contest tho Mayoralty) arid that those present willing to do So bo asked to give in their names as candidates for the council. After some rather noisy discussion, in tho courso of which it was pointed out that tho meeting had not ostensibly been called for such a purpose, Mr. H. W. Shortt moved as an amendment that tho meeting could not tako upon itself the responsibility of asking Mr. Barr to contest tho Mayoralty. This was seconded aud discussed in lively mariner. Ultimately tho meeting gave permission to tho movers of both tho motion and tho amendment to withdraw their motions. Mr. Coonibo then declined to submit any further proposal. Mr. Button eulogised the work done by the present Mayor and councillors, and moved that a vote of thanks and confidence bo accorded them. This was seconded, and carried by a substantial majority. The present Mayor of Eastbourne is Mr. F. G. Bolton. His decision in regard to Easfbounio will naturally depend upon his decision in regard to the City Mayoralty. Sir. John Barr is as yet tho only' other candidate announced. Tho present council consists of Councillors, Bannatyne, Danks, Foley, Howden, M'Kenzie, M'Keegan, Robertson, and Shortt. It is understood that at least three of those contemplate retiring from offico. ONSLOW.
The borough of Onslow has recently been ! subdivided anew, aud now consists of three wards, Khandallah, Crofton or Ngaio, and Kaiwarra. Mr. J. G. Harkness, the present ] Mayor, will in all probability offer himself for re-election, and there is a slight chanco of Councillor Fitzgerald also coming forward for tho honour. The following ore the probable candidates for tho Borough Council:— Khandallah Ward—Councillors Plimmer and Watson, and Mr. Georgo Nash, formerly a councillor and at present representing the borough on the Hospital Board. Crofton Ward—Councillor Aphn and Mr. G. W. Darvall. Thero is a rumour that Mr. Jno. Holmes, sen., will also stand. Kaiwarra Ward —Councillors Kiernan and Lynneberg and Messrs. A. Carver and W. H. Bowden. [ MIRAMAR. In tho Miramar Borough almost all of the mombers of the council havo stated their intention of not seeking re-election, but whether they will alter thoir minds before nominations close remains to bo seen. KARORI. No definite announcements have been made in regard to candidates for the Council and Mayoralty of the Karori Borough. CITY COUNCIL. Mr. W. H. Bennett, ex-president of tho New Zealand Master Builders' Association, has been requested to accept nomination for the City Council at next month's election. Ho has promised to give his reply in a day or two.
