AN AUCKLANDER ON WELLINGTON.
Sir,—After a threo weeks' sojourn in your city—the first since 1847 —will you afford space to record briefly a few personal impressions?— Population, orderly; harbonr management, splendid, notably those iron gates in protection of valuable property; Electric, Tram Company, most excellent, a model, and, both motormen and conductors equally merit praise for skill, vigilance, and general civility; Postal Department, tho diligonco, expertness, and courtesy displayed well becomes tho capital city of the Dominion; police force, tho members of this forco seem to'bo as indispensable at tho street corner tramlines as regards tho safety of men, wom-on, and children as arc their compeers in the great city of London itself; streets and roads, the general good condition of theso reflects considerable credit on those responsiblo for them; suburbs, your suburbs 'ore certainly picturesque in the extreme in their varied elevations, and their views—for a wide scenery, perhaps Brooklyn excels; street signplates, hero exists a most singular lack, and which imposes a grievous troublo on all strangers and visiters ; Y.M.C.A., tho success of this true, manly, social, and sympathetic institution is very gratifying; Boys' Institute, this endeavour truly deserves all possible support from the public. Tho Lord's Day, well, ■ it is perhaps possible that Wellington might in general exhibit a somewhat nobler example to the rest of tho Dominion in its sacred observance, for a continued disregard of tho day is bound to lead downwards, and that towards paganism itself in a professed Christian country.—l am, etc., S. ROUT. March 26.
