POLO MEETING.

AT PALMERSTON.

THE CONCLUDING GYMKHANA. (BY TELEGIUrU—SPECIAL L'OUUKSPONDENT.) Palmorston, March 2&. Tho annual gymkhana, in connection with tho polo tournament, was commenced at Awapuni on Saturday morning, when tho three races always held in addition to tho sports were run. There was a very good attendance, principally of polo people, and threo bookmakers were also present. The weather which had been beautifully fine during tho week and tho morning, broke just before the first raco, and drizzling rain sot in, which, of courso, put an effectual damper on tho proceedings. Appended are the results:— Manawatu Polo Cup. Presented by Mr. L. A. Abraham. Weight, 12st. 71b. Four furlongs.—Mr. W. C. A. M'Kenzie's b. m. Vivian (Mr. H. J. Cameron), 1; Mr. L. M'Kelvie's hlk. iu. Keogh (owner), 2; Mr, F. T. Watson's b. m. Mischief (Mr. J. B. Gaisford), 3. Also ran: Lady Scott (Mr. Goring Johnston); Topaz (Mr. R. Reynolds); Jemina (Mr. R. A. Abraham); Lucky Shot (Mr. A. Camoron) j Kulsoma (Mr. C. Bennett); Cypress (Mr. 0. Nelson). Vivian and Lucky Shot were first off tho mark, and racod together for a couple of furlongs, when Vivian drew away and won in a canter by ten lengths. Kulsoma was finishing second, but this rider was caught napping, and was passed by each of the placed horses. Kulsoma was fourth, and Topaz fifth. Time, 52 3-ssec. Manawatu Polo Hurdles. Trophy presented by Mr. W. Strang ; weight, 12st. 71b.. Six furlongs.—Mr. A. Cameron's b. in. Lucky Shot (owner), 1; Mr. H. J. Cameron's b. ni. Vixen (owner), 2; Mr. G. Rcynolds's rn. in. Pink 'Un (Mr. J. B. Gaisford), 3. Also.ran: Clean Swoop . (Mr. N. Scott). Lucky Shot led all tho way, and won easily by a couple- of lengths. Timo, lmin. 31scc. Manawatu Polo Scurry. Trophy presented by Dr. Martin, vice-president; catch weights, placed horses in cup and hurdles barred. Three furlongs,—Mr. A. Camoron's br. g. Bobby (Mr. H. J. Cameron), lj Mr. W. C. A. M'Kenzie's ch. m. Lady Gold (Mr. Coleman), 2; Mr. 0. Nelson's rn. m. Lady Betty (owner), 3. Eleven started. Bobby took charge opposite tho stand, and won comfortably by a length, Lady Gold a length away third. Time, 39 l-16sec. . Mr. Hartgill judged tho events, Mr. Norton was timekeeper,. and Mr. J. R. F. Pratt dispatched tho fields. Other ovents resulted as follow:— Sports Bending Competition. Trophy presented by Mr. Goring Johnston.— J. D. Coloman's Cora (owner), 1. Tho competition was run in heats and winners of these were as follow:—Mr. H, N. Watson's Scroggins; Mr. H. N. Watson's Plain Bill; Mr. G. Roynolds's Skein; Mr. R. P. Abraham's \Rangi; Mr. A. Strang's l Fathor O'Flynn: Mr. J. D. Colemau's Cora; Mr. W. C. A. M-'Kenzio's Lassie. The semi-final was won by Plain Bill, but bis rider broke a stirrup in tho final, leaving Coleman to win easily. Polo Ball Race.—Heat winners wero as follow:—Mr. R. Reynolds's Dobson, Mr. H. N. Watson's Plain Bill,. Mr., 0. Nelson's Elaine, Mr. C. Bennett's Red Pepper, Mr. N. Scott's Maori Girl, Mr. A. Strang's Whalebone, Mr. J. R. Murphy's Bla. Final: Mr. H. N. Watson's Plain Hill (Mr. Baker), 1; Mr. A. Strang's Whalebone, 2. Applo Bobbing R-aco, for trophy".—R. Scott, 1; J. D. Scott, 2. Twelve competitors. The event was tho most amusing of tho day, tho frantic efforts of tho competitors to got a mouthful of tho apple bobbing about in a bucket of water evoking much laughter. -.Whistling Race, for trophy.—Miss Bennett's g. m. Do Wet (Mr. J. D. Murphy), 1: Lady Jane Gathqrno Hardy's g. m. Mother Alby (Captain Gathorno Hardy), 2. Miss R. Simpson's Tommy Burns, ridden by Mr. 11. A. Abraham, came first, but ho finished with a blank ticket and was consequontly disqualified. Slow Race, bareback.—Mr. D. W. Strang's Kitty (Mr. Giesen); 1; Lady Jano Gatliorno Hardy's Mother Alby (Mr. A. Strang), 2. Eight starters. ' The winner proved herself triumphantly slow and won very easily. Captain Hardy finished first and a trophy was awarded him. i . Ladies' Bracelet oveut, for bracelet presented by Mrs. A. Strang; second prize, trophy.—First- heat: Miss Wilson's Lady Scott (Mr. R. Wilson). Second heat: Mrs. H. J. Cameron's Canny (Mr. H. J. Cameron). Third heat: Miss Bennett's Do Wot (Mr. J. D. Murphy). Fourth heat: Mrs. W. C. A. M'Kenzio's Lassie (Mr. M'Konzie). Final: Miss Wilson's Lady Scott, 1; Miss Bennett's Do Wet, 2. ' Tug-of-War, bare back.—Hawke's Bay A boat Maugaheia, Paerwanui beat Manawatu B, Manawatu A beat Rangitikei, Parowanui beat Hawko's Bay A, Parewanui beat Manawatu A. After the sports the prizes won woro presented to tho successful competitors by Lady Plunket.
