YACHTING.
[L:- ?,!Ai;;snEi:T.]
In spite of the heavy nor'-wester, which brought lip a lumpy sea, tho To Are Failing Club carried out tlioir raoe last Saturday. Dining tho race, "Mainshect" was struck vory much by tho way tho boys handled tlioir boatb in tho heavy sea and wiAd, and the To Ai'O Sailing Club must bo congratulated on tho quality of their boats and the game, capable crews with which they are manned. Thero is no fear of yachting deteriorating while tho young clubs encourage tho small boats and the youthful yachtsmen. All tho boats shipped a great deal of water, and, as the crows wero engaged in "hanging out," they could not bale. It would bo a good idea if they had their bailers on long handles, as tho Dauntless crow had on Anniversary Day. Then they could bale, and keep their weight up as well. 'l'ho To Aro Sailing Club proposo holding a ladies' race for their wholo fleet, which includes tho Thorndon Club's dinghies. A handsome trophy has boen promised for it. This raco should prove interesting if held in a light full-sail southerly. It will give tho ladies another chanco to show tho boys how to sail. All the yachts wero out on Sunday in a fine nor'-west breeze. Tho Syren went for an ocean cruise to ralliscr Bay. Tho Taipare was fishing at Pitzroy Bay. lorangi, l'atronus, and Viking went outside. Janet, May, and Atalauta were at Scorching 'Bay. They were joined by the lorangj in tho afternoon, which had a good race home with the Janet. They got under way together, and after a good raco lorangi won by a few lengths. lorangi was under her cruising trysail 'and staysail. Janet had a reef in at the start, but shook it out at Kau Bay.
Mr. Ward's new boat was out on Snnday, in company with Luna and Kotiri. They presented a pretty sight sailing in company. Great rivalry exists between the owners and crews of the two third-class yachts, Karaka and May. A challenge race is being held this afternoon around the P.N.Y.C. No. 1 course, for a substantial stake. If the weather proves favourable it ought to prove an exciting event.
