ALLEGED SERIOUS NUISANCE.
Among matter.) reported on by the Abattoirs, Milk Supply, and Public Health Committee to the City Council on Thursday night wai what was alleged to be a serious nuisanco caused by a cess-pool on premises at Island Bay. It was stated that tho cess-pool was reported adversely on by Air. Pringle in October last, but tho report was not before the committee. The district health officer had since reported that a nuisanco existed, and recommended that action be taken under Section 5G of tho Public Health Act, 190S, for its suppression, and the committee had given instructions accordingly. They were of opinion that the matter was one that should bo attended to,' and the by-laws relating to it enforced forthwith. The committee regret that the chief sanitary inspector did not, at the time the nuisanco was Drought under his notice, havo a thorough inspection mado of the premises.' Councillor Shirtcliffo moved tho adoption of tho report, Councillor M'Laren moved, as an amendment, that the words "and tho committee recommend that the sanitary inspector bo asked for'an explanation" be added to the renort. Councillor Shirfclilfe stated that 48 hours' notice had been given to those concerned to abate the alleged nuisance, and if nothing was dono at the expiration of that time proceedings would be instituted. In reply to a question, tho Mayor stated that'up to April last cess-pools wore not prohibited in Melrose. Tho amendment was approved, after which the report as amended .was adopted.
