DECAY OF MERCHANT MARINE OF AMERICA. Tho San Francisco correspondent of the "Evening Standard" says:—Time was when 'Frisco had a great grain trade, and a big fleet to 1 carry it. Now the grain trade does not amount to much—partly because Californian farmers have taken to raising fruits and other crops that are moro profitable, and nartly becauso the last half-dozen seasons have been unfavourable to grain crops. It is wortli remembering that in 1882, when the State had a record wheat crop, 559 ships went loaded out of San Francisco to carry the grain to Europe. Of theso ships, 154 flew tho American flag, and 405 sailed under foreign register. In tho last seven years 602 grain ships have sailed from San Francisco, and only twelve of theso Dew tho American flag. Even worso is tho record of the last four years, when not ono ship of American register cleared from the Golden Gate with grain for foreign ports. England controls the trade completely now. Fifty years ago the American merchant marine claimed to bo the largest in tho world, and the American flag Doatcd on every sea where business was to bo found. Subsidies, cheap wages, yet better treatment for crews, have given foreign ships an advantage that American shipowners cannot overcome. THE FIFESHIRE'S EXPORTS. By the F.H.S. At a meeting of tho governors of tho Marino Society held in London last month a report was submitted showing that the boys on board tho Warspitc, or with the agents of tho society, on December 31 last numbered 239. Twentyseven boys had gone into tho Eoyal Navy, 23 of whom had passed direct from tho Warsnite, and lour from tho Port Jackson. From tho Warspite l'H lads had entered tho merchant service, and 46 of tho Port Jackson's company had also lound employment on merchant ships. The powers of the society's agents had becu severely taxed to get boys to sea, for tho past year has been an exceedingly depressed one for British shipping and so many vessels have been laid up that berths for boys had been very difficult to obtain. Credit was, therefore, due to the agents ' lor haying found good ships with fairly high wages for a total of 353 boys shipped and reshipped during tho year. In August last tho committee received an offer from Mr. Q. 11. P. „i v ? s,ly -' £\ tho dandy-rigged sailing vessel Ernest, of 25 tons, as a sailing tender to tho Wnrspite, the craft being completely fitted out in, every detail for cruising at sea. After careful consideration it was decided to accept Mr. Livesay b generous and practical oiler, and tho vessel is now moored oft" tho coeicty'B wharf at Greenhithe, and is being prepared for cruisinj in tho spring.with a view or taking about 20 to of W Thame'™ 0 IOT Ellol ' l CrUiSCB "* Ul ° CBtuary Admiral Sir N. Bowden-Smith, in proposing tho of tho report, said that the Board of trade had stated thai they would allow those boys who sailed on the Port Jackson to count their sea service as double tho value of that served on board a steamer. The Port Jackson, with 29 cadets, left Sydney on lebruary 10, and is expected to roach London in May. Tho Union Company's steamer llaitol left Snva at 8 p.m. on Thursday.for Auckland.
