TO-DAY'S SPORTS.

An athletic sports carnival is to bo held,on the Basin Rese-vo this afternoon, under tho auspices of the Catholic Club and Hibernian Society, assisted by Victoria Co lege. Dr. Newman, who is ono of tho best authorities on athletics in Australasia, avers that Woodger, ono of tho competitors, is better than cither Hempton or Smith, and anyone who has seen these two runners in thoir prime can gaugp tho prowess of Woodger. Woodger will start in tho 100 yds and 220 yds. Tho competitors in tho New Zealand Championships present, togother with tho Victoria College entries, as well as the ordinary entries, should provide good sport. Tho programme includes sprint races, long-dis-tanco runs, hurdling, walking handicaps, sack raco, tug-of-war, wrestling, jumping, and Irish jigs. A special feature of tho dancing will bo an exhibition Irish reel by Misses Mona Butloi and Imelda Fama, who will dnnco in costume. The tng-of-var should be the event of tin afternoon. Mr. J. Doyle will'judge tho tug-of-war. No spiked shoes or boots will be allowed

The Oriental Football Club aro commencing practice at 2.45 this afternoon, at Miramar. An announcement in tho advertisement columns draws attention to a lectnro which Mr. W. P. Prico is to deliver at 7 p.m. or Wodnesday night at Courtcnay Place corner. "The Potato-Growing Industry," and other 'matters will bo touched on.

Tho Railway Department advertises oxcursioa tickets during tho Eostor holidays.
