"NO USE TO AUCKLAND."

, THE SAN FRANCISCO-PAPEETE-WEL-LINGTON SERVICE. I (BY TBIiEOBiPH—rRESS ASSOCIATIONS Auckland, March 26. '. The announcement ttiat arrangements had been made for a regular mail service, from London to Wellington, via SaUjFrancisco and Papeete, was tho subject of considerable discussion in commercial circles to-day. The general opinion which/prevailed was that so tar as the new service was ooncerned it was of absolutely no use to Auckland.

■ "I look upon this matter as a very serious one indeed for Auckland and for tho Dominion as a wholo," said Mr. Bart Kent, president,of, the Chamber'of Commerce, "and I think it is very much to be regretted that the Government has not made greater efforts to net the old San Francisco service reestablished, via Auckland. Any other route equally swift and as reliable cannot be available for . soino years to come, and all such routes as that from 'San Francisco to Tahiti and then on to Wellington can only bo regarded in the light of makeshifts. Tho Mariposa, which is to carry the mails to Papeete, must certainly be regarded as a slow and out-of-date boat, whilst tho Union Company's boats from tbo Islands to Wellington are cargo boats of a very moderate speed indeed. It is nothing but makeshift with an ulterior design."
