EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of tho .Wellington Education Board was hold yesterday, thore being present:—Mr. Robert Leo (chairman), and Messrs. J. Kebbell, A .11. Vile, William \ Allan, .1. G. W. Aitken, Captain T. W. M'Donald, and the Hon. A. W. Hogg. THE BOARD'S FINANCES. The monthly statement of finances showed that the following accounts were in credit:— General account, ,£IG29 ss. lOd.; technical account, ,£79 ss. lOd.j finance and technical account, .£397 15s. 3d.; teachers' salaries account, <£1353 ss. lid.; deposit account, .£72 126. fid.; total amount in credit, i13ii.12 ss. lOd. In debit-.—Building account, ,£49ls 7s. 7d,| secondary account, «£2OO 15s. Sd.; total amount In debit, ,£5163 3s. 3d. The debit balance oil the finances 011 Marcli 25 was therefore ,£16:10 17s. 5d., as against a debit for tho previous month of X2GBI 4s. Tho contract liabilities (including sites) amounted to .£4462 9s. 3d. The pay-sheet, amounting to ,£8451 19s. 9d„ was passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. Government grants—l. Notification was received from the Department that an addition Of JJ67I would be added to the board's building grant. 2. The Department forwarded the annual grant of ,£275 for the instruction of teachers in manual and technical subjects. Muritai Sehool.-'Witli regard to additions at Muritai, and tho application for temporary accommodation, tho clerk of works was requested to furnish a report to bo submitted to the Education Department. Eastern Hutt Sohool.—The requirements of Eastern Hutt were considered together with a fresh petition from the residents of the district. It was decided that the whole question, with full data appertaining thereto, be resubmitted to the Department. Brooklyn School. —"With, reference to tho board s application for a grant of .£2997 10s. far tho erection of a two-storied building in brick at tho Brooklyn School, tho Department notified that any grant made would only be based on immediate requirements, and that a proposal from tho board to make a, beginning with a class-room so designed as to form part of a larger plan for the future would bo entertained. As the school, from its. situation, could nover form a manual training centre, th proposal to use the present infant schoolrooms for woodwork.and cookery classes could liot bo considered. The board,'upon receiving from its senior _inspector (Mr, Fleming) au assurance that the addition of one class-room Would not satisfactorily cover immediate requirements, decided to refer the matter back to tho Department, with a that a grant 011 a. basis of two additional class-rooms bo made. Wadestown School. —An application for increased accommodation at Wadestown Sohool was referred to the board's advisors for-a report. Maranui School.—The matter of adjusting the accommodation at tho Maranui School, certain rooms of which wore overcrowded, While others had sparo accommodation, Was left in the hands of tho chairman and tho inspectors to doal with. WORKS AND FINANCE COMMITTEE. On tho recommendation of tho Works and Financo Committee, grants wero authorised for \vorks at Brooklyn, Otaki, Carterton, Tokomaru (If Government assents), Lansdottnfc, Levin, Clareville, Waikanae, Hastwell, Mount Cook Schools. (3), ManukaU, Maranui, MataVawa, and Nowman. Improvement works on the Pnhiatua School grounds Wero referred to tho chairman and Inspectors, Supplies of globes, ohairs, seeds, anu Navy League maps Were authorised. Consideration of ah application for gas installation at tho teacher's residence at LGVin Was deferred. New desks were authorised for Waikanao and Martinborough. It was decided to obtain tho sanction of tho Department to tho fcalo of the Karori side school site and building, Tho proposal of tho Belvedere Committee as to Water 'supply was approved. An application from Levin for ft grant of ,£G 125., tho Court and- judgmont expenses, was declined. Tho offer of tllo South Wellington Land Company of a school site was accepted with thanks; tho board undertaking that when a school is required fftr Yogeltown and a grant provided, the building will bo erected nu the site presented. Tho following tefldors were accepted 1— Printing, W. J. Lalißsllcar; To Aro (repairs to roof), T. A. Wells! Maiigat.ilnoUti (plumbing), C. 13. Clifton | Section .61, Block I, Miikufi, M. Alpass; Section 10, Block V, Puketoi, C. B. Cox. The tender of 15. Morgan for Section 17, Block V, I'uketoi, was declined. GENERAL. Cfidct appointments:—No. 1 Company, Mas* terton, Mr. J. G. Bee; adjutant, Wairnrapa Battalion, Captain N. D. Bunting. The secretary (.Mr. Q. L. Stewaft) was appointed to audit tho accounts of the school committees. 1 x Tho board decided: That tho tiso of the training college gymnasium be granted to the pupils attending the Girls' College for two hours per week at a payment of .£lO per annum, and that its use for privat? classes be declined; that applications bo invited for the position of instructress in needlework at the college, 30 lessons of two hours each, at (£2O per annum; that a grant of ,£2 14s. Gd. for musio for tho students bo approved; and that furniture bo provided for the lady teachers' room at a cost not exceedinz <£10.
