WAIIIORA, FROM NEWCASTLE. Early yesterday morning the Union Company's steamer Waihora arrived from Newcastle. She had an uneventful fine weather passage acroes the Tnsuian Sea. Her inward cargo comprises 7000 tons of coal, 4CCO tons being for Wellington and tho balance for Lyttclton and Tiinaru. It is expected that she will lcavo for the south about the end of this week. FIVE UNION STEAMERS. Whilst it is not unusual for three Union lincra to enter an appearance in port at Melbourne within a brief space of time, the arrival of five representatives of tho line in 30 hours i>! a singular occurrence. This, however, happened on March 13 and 14, the vessels ccTicerned being the Loougana, Wainui, Maheno, Oonah, and Korouiiko. T!io first to come to hand was the Wainui on Saturday evening. She w»s followed at a late hour of the night by tho Maheno, from New Zealand ports, via Hobart. On Sunday morning tho Loongana, from Launceston, berthed up the river, and joined in tho afternoon by the Oonah, from Burnie, whilst late on Sunday night the Koromiko, with a cargo o£ Westport coal for the warships, arrived from New Zealand. ■ INDItALEMA. IN A HURRICANE. A strenuous battle of six hours' duration was waged between the Tysor liner Indralcma and a hurricane in the Southern Ocean, reports a Melbourne exchange. The approaching disturbance, which was heralded by an ominous tail in the barometer, struck tho vessel in lat. 47deg. south and long. 116deg. east. Without a moment's respite during tho period mentioned the wind roared in deafening fury, bringing up prodigious seas, from which the more timid of thoso on board turned away with some misgivings. The Indralema, which had, however, often emerged triumphant from similar encounters, I again showed herself equal to the emergency. She arrived in the "powder" ground off Altona early on Saturday morning, March 13, direct from London. Besides a large quantity of general cargo, the vessel carried 400 tons of explosives, which were transhipped at the anchorage. EXPORTS FOR LONDON. AUXILIARY SAILING VESSELS. A Sydnoy exchange says:—The long nnd dreary voyages made on sailing vessels when they aro compared with those accomplished by similar vessels fitted with auxiliary power have evidently favourably impressed ■ the owners of the well-known Rickmcr's Line, for they have been induced to have another vessel similar to the "five-master" E. 0. Eickmers, which visited Sydney some time ago, and loaded for San Francisco. The now vessel is already in the stocks, and it is believed will be afloat before the end of 1909. That there is a considerable saving in time and towage when a vessel with this power is ncaring port is beyond doubt, but in the matter of cargo carrying space the advantage certainly lies with the plain "sailer," although it is not of great moment, for the engines do not take up much room. Where the prineipnl profit is met is\in the time taken by the auxiliary vessel on a passage, ae there is little or np delay owing to unfavourable winds. This fact is illustrated by the following performances of the R. 0. Rickmors on the ten voyages she has completed. In six hundred and ten days she covered 100,310 miles.' - Her'ton. passages were as follow:—Bremen to New York, New York to.Saigon, Saigon to Bankok, Bankok to Bremen, Hamburg! to San Pedro, San Pedro to Sydney, Sydney to San Francisco. This is 165 miles a day, or about seven miles an hour, averaging tho running time of the ten voyages in which this vessol has earned 945,462 marks, or. about £47,274, for the 942 flays she has been either at sea or in port. In thu thirty-one months tho E. 0. Itickmers carried 40,000 tons of oargo, dead-weisht. •

Official notico is given that Noumea is tho only port in New Caledonia which is open to vessels in the Transatlantic trade, and all chips'with mixed cargoes must put'in there l for. inward clearance. Vessels, however, bound for other ports of New Caledonia for shipping entire ore cargoes or discharging mining machinery may go direct to thoso ports. Good progress has been made with the work of salvaging' tho Charles Edward during fie l»3t week (says t>n exchango), the purchasers having been greatly favoured in I their work by fine weather nnd smooth seas. The vessel is to be pumped as dray as possible as soon as tho receding tides will permit, and a gang of men have, at each succeeding ebb tide, discharged a considerable quantity of the coal from the vessels holds.
