(FKOSI OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENTS.) « PALMEKSTON. Mr. Cunninghamo, of tho firm of Collinson and Cuuninghamc, Limited, well known in Palmerston bnsiness circles, leaves to-day on a trip to England. Yesterday afternoon the officers of the Palmorston Methodist Churches wished Mr. Cunninghamo hon voyago at a luncheon. Mr. G. H. Bennett presided, and there were present about twenty of the'leading officers of the two local Churches, besides some country' representatives. In proposing tho health of the guest, tho chairman mentioned that Mr. Ciinninghauie had been an honourable business man, and a splendid worker in tho Church. Other members also spoke, and wished their guest a pleasant holiday. Complimentary mention was also mado of the departing ministers, Revs. J. J. Lewis and H, Beggs.
. CAItTERTON. A hockey. club has been established at Dalefield, with Mr. C. Tunnicliffo as coach. It is understood that Mr. Colin Goodin lias sold his farm at Clareville, and will take up his residence in Kent Street, Carterton, where ho has purchased a residence. Mr. C. Wodde, who has hold the position of headmast-er for some time at Waihtkekn, leaves in the course of a few days for Nelson. To mark tho esteem in which he was held, ho recently was mado tho recipient of an oak and silver salad bowl, inscribed:— "Presented to Mr. and Mrs. Wedde by the scholars of Waihakoke, 19/3/09." , On Sunday, special harvest thanksgiving services were held in St. Mark's Church, the building being decorated with evidences of a plentiful harvest. An appropriate sermon wa3 preached by the Rev. R. Young, who i took his text from Matthew v, 45. Tho choir, which has greatly improved-of late, rendered the beautiful anthem, "0 Lord, How Manifold aro Thy Works." The quarterly meeting of the Hope of Carterton Tent, 1.0. R., was held en Monday evening, Brb. W. Tucker, P.C.R., presiding. One- member was declared off tlio sick fund. Bro. W. H. Partridge reported upon tho business dealt with at tho United .Friendly Societios' Council meeting, and it was decided to support the idea of obtaining ft bed in tho South Wairarapa Hospital, if tho matter could bo arranged with tho trustees. The installation of Bro. Tucker as secretary, Bro. J. Preddy as treasurer, and Bro. T. w. Foster as D.R. was carried out by Bro. W. H. Partridge. Ordinary quarterly business was also transacted. Tho hospital box at tho Marquis of Normanliy Hotel was e!»ared the other day, and its contents, amounting to £2 165., which carries with it a Government subsidy of 245., forwarded to the hospital authorities. Word reached Carterton on Monday of the death of Mr. Matthew M'Leod, which occurred in the Otaki Hospital that day. Tho lato Mr. M'Leod, who is well-known in sawmilling circles, was at one tinio manager for Messrs. W. Booth and Co., of Carterton, and leaves a widow, who will have the sympathy of a largo circle of friends. Totara Lodge, U.A.0.D., met on Monday ovening, Bro. G. Hart, A.D., presiding. Two members were declared on tho sick fund, and orio off. It was decided to support the proposal that tho funds in tho. liaiids of tlio Friendly Societies' Council bo used to provide a bed for the uso of lodgo members in tho South Wairarapa Hospital. . Members of tho Wbbdvillo Football Club met in tho Council Chambers on Monday night to.say good-bye to ono of their members, Mr. H. Crawford, who is going on an extended trip to the Old Country. A handsbmo travelling rug, indicative of the good wishes or' those present, was presented. During the meeting a pleasant surprise- was occasioned to Dr. P. Mules, who has been a keen supporter.of the club, Mr. Harding, ou behalf of the club, presenting him with a tilver ornamental clock. After returning thanks for the generous gift, Dr. Mules presented the caps won'by, members lastj season.
.'■ ■ .OTAKI. Bowling is now a popular pastiino at Otaki, and though the green is heavy, numbers of enthusiasts patronise it nightly. Competitions for both ladies and -men players are in progress, and, in each class, the president has offered a trophy. Up to tho present three matches have been played, viz., Johanseu, 22, v. Brown, 14; Stevens, 23, v. Rawson, 18; Satherloy, 31, v. Ling, 6. Freeman forfeited to Farmer. One match in the ladies' division has been played, Mrs. Katfson . defeating Mrs.', Stevens. M'Culloch, whoso funeral took place there yesterday. .. ■ Entries for the Horticultural- Show closed last night, and arc considered satisfactory. Much enthusiasm is being shown over the event, and present indications betoken its ultimate success. . FEATTIERSTON. The Featherston Tennis Club journeyed to Martinborough on Saturday to play an interclub match with the latter club. A fairly strong wind was blowing down tho courts, and, at one stage of tho match, the sun was troublesome to those playing against it. Martinborough played a consistent game all through ; and only lost one gamo. 'Ibis was the ladies' single—Miss Button v. Miss O'Brien. Iu this game tho scores were very close, Miss Bonton winning by one poiuv During the afternoon the visitors wero hospitably entertained by tho ladies, who provided afternoon tea for the victors and vanquished alike. A return match is to be played either next Thursday or Saturday. It is only fair to the winners to stato ■ that they put their four best players out to give Featherston a bettor chance of making the match interesting.
