HUTT AND PETONE NEWS

(FHOM OUB SrECUL KEPOnTER.). 1 PETONE JUNIORS. FIRST ANNUAL SPORTS. Tho Amateur Athletic Club attached to flt« Potono Junior Club made its first venture on Saturday, holding an open sports meeting. For some timo past tho club has hold evening sports, at which tho trophies were necessarily of small value. At last, however, it was decided to hold a larger meeting, in which other amateurs would bo invited to compote. Doubts were expressed as to tho wisdom of tho move, but good entries were received from Wellington clubs, and only fina weather was required to ensuro the success of tho meeting. Although a strong northerly I blew on Saturday afternoon, tho rain held off, and consequently the nttendanco of tho public was satisfactory. This was an important consideration, because tho club needed financial held in its enterprise. As it is, expenses have been about met. v Tho half-mile attracted the largest field, there being 15 starters. It was won by H. l._ Ihompson, of tho W.A.C., in 2min. 7 1-jscc—good time, considering the strength of the wind and tho heaviness of the track. Ihirtccn competed in tho 120 yards and 220 yards open handicaps, and for tho quarter there was a field of 12. J. Thomson won tha 100 yards club handicap in 10 3-ssec, from scratch, nine others competing. There were also tho long jump, schools' handicap, officials' race, and bandsmen's race, but themost interesting event of tho day uiidoubt* cdly was tho boys' half-milo walk. In this raco the judges were kept busy disqualifying competitors who persisted in "breaking." A strenuous finish was fought out between tho two placed boys and tho rear lad, forgetting .himself in tho excitement, ran tho last yard. However, none of the others finished, and ho was placed second. Tho handicapping was somewhat out in a numbor of cases, but, seeing that most of tha runners wore strangers to Potoue handicapped, it must be admitted that, on the wholo. fair starts were given.. The Citizens' Band played a number of selections during tho afternoon. The nidges were Messrs. H. J. Palmer, A. Ross, E. Grant, S. Bricc, J. Packard, and P. Ryan, the timekeepers Messrs. W.
