HOCKEY MATCH.

..MARINERS AND MADDENS. A hockey match between the late Kiwi Ladies' Club and the officers of R.M.S. Athenic took place at Day's Bay on Saturday afternoon, the teams turning out as follows: — Kiwis.—Miss N. West, Miss E. West, Miss D. Holmes, Miss K. Doughty, Miss .6. Gear, Miss E. Gear, Miss E. Chalmers, Miss G. Harcourt, Miss I. Gccldes, Miss D. Glasgow. All Whites.—V. W. Hickijon, Dr. Coghlau, H. T. G. Harle, G. Holmes, F. Kirby, J. Coulter, L. Magness, W. Horsburgh, H. Eastwood, E. K. Irving. ' Promptly at 2.30 the teams bullied off, and before tho "Athenics" had realised what they were called on to face, tho ladies ended' up a fine passing bout by placing the ball in the net (from the stick of Miss D. Glasgow), after ten minutes' play. From somo looso play around the ladies' goal, Dr. Coghlan notched the equaliser. Again the ladies made an onslaught on the Athenic goal, and some fine passing play, in which tho Misses West, E. Gear, and D. Glasgow were prominent, ended in the last-named finding the net again, giving the goalkeeper no chance whatever. The teams crossed over with tho score 2—l in the ladies' favour. On resuming, the Athenic mado a hard effort to turn' the tables, and shot after shot was put in only tj find the lady in charge of the goal very much alive, to her responsibility. After fifteen' minutes,' Irving beat tho goalkeeper, and a few minutes later Magness met with' success. Then the ladies made a fine rally, and for the next few minutes .the Athenic backs and goalkeeper had a lively time, eventually clearing, and carrying the play to tho other end, where Eastwood put in tho fourth goal, and just before'timo Horsburgh added tho fifth, leaving the Athenic team winners by 5-f2. From tho result no idea can bo gathered of tho evenness of play. The ladies would have had a different tale to tell had they had any practice the season before. It may bo said that thero was no handicap whatever. After tho game the ladies entertained their guests at afternoon tea, which ended a very enjoyable evening.
