Owners ate reminded that nominations for tho Patea Racing Club's annual meeting olose on Monday evening. The meeting is to' be held on Easter Monday, on tho ■ Hawera Racecourse. NOTES AND COMMENTS. The Taranaki Cup will be decided on Wednesday next. W. Young, who rode Twinkle at Shannon on Wednesday, also rode Pearlie when tho Royal Artillery mare won threo races at Shannon last year. St. Aidan, who will in future be trained at Riccarton, was shipped south on Thursday.- ■ . . • _ Hon. J. D. Ormond, who won the Napier Cup with Woodhey on Wednesday, had' previously won the event with North Atlantic in 1895, and' with Spindrift in 1896. Several new ponies are entered for the Miramar April meeting.' These include Kotiro, Mahi, Bobs, Rover, Cassina, Kitty, Mahuku, and Vim. ' ' . Master Fish (Swordfish—Nina) was taken from Foxton to compote at the Shannon meeting,, but as tho going was very hard, his "trainer decided not to start him. Weights for tho first day's events at the Wellington Raoing', Club's Autumn meeting will'bo declared; on Wednesday, April 14, after the Easter race meetings. Four of the winners on the first day of the' Napier Park Racing Club's meeting progeny of the ICaramu sire, _ Birkenhead, and Martyriuni credited the imported siro with a win on Thursday... Th'o good race that Voetgang ran against Aberbrotbook on the second day of the Dannevirke meeting, would' account for the San ' Frari filly being well supported in the Telegraph Hack Handicap at Greenmeadows yesterday. ■ 1 'Glissade and Continuance were the only double winners at the Naj)ier Park meeting. Continuance won his first race on the second day'of the Poverty Bay Turf Club's , meeting last month, and also secured placo money on each day of tho Dannevirke meeting.., He has shown improvement, with each gallop. ; Sealer was made a'hot favourite for the race won by. Continuance on Thursday, but tho big Workman gelding could only run second. Local backers were heavy losers by his defeat. At last year's Autumn meeting of the Napier Park Racing Club,' horses hailing from the Karamu stable won seven races on the .two days. At tho meeting just coneluded tho : stable won four;.races*..but there - are still a number of its ;inmates. that have " Ic " if iiot yet 'h'dd- th"eir' r hames ; jplaced'!on tho winning list this season.' I; " Rain was badly wanted, for tho majority . ; of', tho tracks in this district, arid: the present downfall should do a lot of good. , With Bobrikoff out of the way,- Stylish • could scarcely help winning the St. Patrick's Handicap at Greenmeadows on Thursday, for his three opponents were a very poor lot. Moreover, Stylish has done well on the racing he has done during. the. past couple of months, and when as well as he is just now this half-brother to Pink-'Un is decidedly useful.
■Hipporofla, found 1 the. going too, heavy at Napier Park cn Thursday to do any good with his crushing weight in the hurdles, but when .he ' finds the tracks suitable again- he will win. moro races over the battens, for it takes a lot of poundage to stop a really good horse. i ; ■ Winning jockeys at the Napier Park Racing Club's meeting were: E. Lowe five, L. Wilson four, T. ■ Carroll two, J. Hall, D. Watt, J. Sceats, J. Buchanan, antl F. D. Jones one each. A Taranaki sportsman, writing to _ the Auckland "Herald," states that he believes Kilmarnock's dam was by The' Australian from' a mare by Python, from Kate O'Shane by Coledon, from, a mare by The Emigrant. Kato O'Shane, he states, was.bred in.Canterbury. At the Opunake races on Wednesday tho principal. race was won .by Paul (St. PaulMoth), with Billow and Royal Youngster in the places. Other winners at the meeting were Toddy, Hydraulic, Valentine, Tam Glen, Billow, and Lady Heroine. The Maniapoto—Serf colt, which failed to find a buyer at the auction salo of yearlings in Hawera last month, was : recently purchased by Mr. J. Goodwin for something over 100 guineas. Now that the correct time for, the .Champion Stakes has come to hand, a Hawke's Bay paper ridicules the idea of Signor creating a time record of three miles, basing its argumertt on the opinion that it would take him all his time to run sis furlongs in Imin. 16sec. This sounds very well, but there is argument and a little reason on tho other side. The first raco Signor ever won was a live-furlongs race, in which ho boat two smart spnntors m Little Mary and Ikon, and ran the distance in lmin. 2 3-ssec. Then again, there is his Canterbury Cup performance, where his average for the ; whole eighteen furlongs was under 13scc per furlong, and to all appearances that was an easy task for him. Had the going *t Flemington been anywav fast the day Signor competed, it is certain that he would have registered fast time, for, stoutly bred as ho is, he would run the last furlong of the three miles as fast as the first, but with his 9st., the'heavy going was all against him that day. Then he was most unlucky to meet such a good three-year-old as Pcndil, and notwithstanding the fact that some Australian .writers declare Signor is a common little chap to look at, it is easier to call him plain than to fault him, for he is a horse with a lot of character. Mr. J. R. M'Donald, owner of Gold Crest, has at Levin a handsome filly, by Conqueror, from a full-sister to Tortulla, which will be placed in work at Porirua as soon as there is a box available. Several yearlings, the property of tho well-known Wanganui breeder, Mr. George Currie, were shipped to Sydney yesterday, and will be entered nt the Easter sales. The youngsters aro all by 'Field Battery, and on account of their sire's closo relationship to Multiform, it is expected that they will realise good prices on tho other side. '
In this issue, Mr. W. A. North advertises for sale the racing pony Firefly, who will be competing at Miramar to-day.. Firefly lias been tho most consistent performer competing at Miramar, and besides winning half-a-dozen races this season, slio lias been placed second on several occasions. She comes under the 14.2 standard. At a meeting of the Wellington Pony and Galloway Racing Club, held yesterday, it was dceidsd that Sweet Letho and Merric Oliver could not start in any races at Miramar to-day. Mr. Lindsay M'Donald will rido Aotea in the Ladies' Bracelet at Masterton next month. The local sportsman, Mr. W. Cowan, who bw beea on a health *.ud t« Rotorua for
the past couple of months, returned to the city last night, and is now much improved in health. A younger brother to jockeys Win. and R. Young will shortly inako his public appearance in the saddle. The hurdle horse Coy is very backward after his recent spell, and will not be a starter at the Masterton meeting. Probably his next appearance will be at the Trentham Autumn fixture. Tumut Ts entered at both the Ellerslie and Riccarton fixtures, and lie should run well wherever his owner decides to tako him. After the Easter meetings it is understood that trainer M'Grnth will take a team to Australia, and in all probability will remain on the other side for several months. PONY AND CALLOWAY R.C. The second day's racing in connection with the March meeting of tho Wellington Pony and Galloway Racing Club is to tako placo at Miramar this afternoon, and if the weather holds fine good fields aro expected to contest the different events. As usual, a special tram service has been arranged for from Courtenay Place, and patrons of the club should have no difficulty in reaching tho course in timo for tho first race, which is set down for 2.30 p.m. Ladies will be admitted free to all parts. AVONDALE DISQUALIFICATIONS. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, March 19. The Avondale Club's committee decided to disqualify C. Nicholson, owner of tho horse Lucio, for life, in connection with the running at the club's last spring meeting. The Metropolitan Committee, endorsed Whitaker's disqualification for two years, and reduoed the _ disqualification on N. Cunningham from life to six months. Nicholson's appeal against the disqualification of Lucio was adjourned. TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB'S AUTUMN MEETINC. (by telegraph—press association - .) Now Plymouth, March 19.
