0 . (FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) The newly-appointed county engineer (Mr. Mwards, of Wellington) has arrived to take up Jus duties. On Tuesday he was shown over a portion of the county works. The- majority of the local representatives at- the United Firo Brigades' Conference. at Auckland returned home on Monday night. Mr. Coleman Phillips is spoken of as a candidate for the Carterton Mayoralty. Messrs. E. Jarnyn and T. So far they have ' been ■-. travelling' twenty, mouths, and have covered 10,000 miles. They started from Capo Town, and have'traversed Africa and Tasmania. .The Chamber of Commerce met on Monday evening, Mr. B. Scannell presiding. Correspondence was read'from .various chambers on tho subject of better railway facilities. The Minister for Railways also wrote acknowledging receipt of the Carterton chamber's communication on the subject, and stating that ho was obtaining reports from his responsible officers, and would communicate further. It was therefore resolved to delay further correspondence with the various chambers of commerce and local bodies until the promised renl.v is received Irom the Minister. "W. W. Mansfield and W. Toomath were appointed delegates on the deputation being organised to wait upon the Minister for Lands to again urge the acceptance of Mr. Buchanan's offer of £5000 towards the establishment of an experiment farm in the Wairarapa, and £1000 towards a dairy herd for such farm. Tho chairman reported that the Longbush mail was carried past tho Gladstono Post Office io Masterton some half-an-hour after tho Gladstone mail left for Carterton, end the Carterton portion reached here by the 3.50 p.m. tram, instead of arriving at 11 a.m. with the Gladstone mail. It was resolved to write to the Postmaster-General, pointing out the anomaly, and asking for remedy. It was reported that tho Clareville mail went to Masterton in the afternoon and back to Carterton next morning, and tho chairman was deputed to interview the postmaster at Carterton concerning the matter. It! was resolved to write to Mr. Tregear, Secretary for Labour, to ascertain why Carterton was not included in the reports of /the district agents of tho Department. On' account of the holiday on St. Patrick's Day, it was decided to make no change in the usual half-holiday. Tho School Committee met on Monday evening. The headmaster was empowered to commence a book-keeping class when sufficient inducement camo forth. It was decided to abandon tho other technical classes. It was reported that the sub-committee appointed to purchase a piano had bought Mr. J. S. Popper's instrument at a cost of £22, the deposit being £10. The headmaster reported a total roll number of 307, with an: avorago attendance of 287. Tho general accouut was reported m credit to the extent of £7 12s. 9d.; technical account, £6 17s. 3d.; agricultural account, £22 7s. lid. Messrs. D. Reid, J. Callister, H. Judd, A. Wilson, and the headmaster wore appointed a committee to go into tho matter or working the agricultural classes, and report at next meeting. / Mr. Heald, local statio'nmaster, left on Tuesday en his annual holiday.
