GERMANY IN THE PACIFIC.
THE ANNEXATION RUMOUR. (dt telegbaph—tress association—copyright.) Molbourne, March 16. Dr. Inner, Consul-General for Germany, characterises the cable message to the effect that it was believed Germany intended to soizo an island in tho Pacific, and transform it into a naval baso, as absurd. He added:—"Tho scare comes, as usual, from an American source. A section of the New York press seldom loses.an opportunity of pitting Australia against Germany. The roports are circulated for purposes of irritation." [Recent cablegrams contained a rumour, published in New York, that Germany intended to annex an island in. the Pacific to use as a naval base. Berlin advices, on the other hand, attributed the movements of. German warships in the Pacific to native unrest in Samoa.] ■ ■ ■ ■ THE ALLEGED NATIVE UNREST IN SAMOA.
