I Women and R.L.S. ••■■ :- Are women as a rule appreciative readers it of Robert Louis Stevenson? Tho Rev. Mr. h Gibson Smith thinks not. Ho gave an j- address last night to tho Reading Circle at 0 the Y.W.C.A. on the personality and writings of Stevenson, and told sadly how, after i, giving tho same address at a women's society e in Invercargill, a number of bis hearers d possessed themselves of books by Stevenson i- and diligently set to work to read them, if They could find nothing in them worth ready ing, and afterwards reproached Mr. Smith g for his misleading eulogies, and Mr. Smith n seemed to. think their attitude was charactera istic. But certain it is, that among t '. greatest admirers of Stevenson aro to to ,- reckoned a very largo number, of women, 1 who aro especially attracted by. his bright .. courago in great physical suffering. On tho o wholo it is a mslSnehoiy state of things if - many women (or men) can see nothing in - (Stevenson. To achieve his view-point is to c r,bo spiritually rich. f A Hospital Appointment. 3 The announcement that Miss Berry, matron 3 of tho Hospital Nurses' Home, lias been appointed matron of tho Napier Hospital will r cause regret to the nurses on the Wellington- • Hospital staff, with whom Miss Berry has , always been very popular.
