PREVENTIVES OF SMUT.

In view of tho reports of disease in tho oat and wheat crops, it is worth while to talw stops in tho next sowings to guard against the trouble. In Canadian experiments, conducted for five years by treating tho seed with formalin, copper sulphate, potassium sulphide, to prevent smut in wheat and oats, nwl hot water, it was found that no smut appeared where tho seed was sprinkled with, or immersed in, dilute formalin, or immersed in liot water, and practically nono where tho seed was soaked in a coppfcr sulphate solution for twelve hours. Tlio other treatments were less efficient. Tho Early Ripe variety of oat was found to bo almost entirely proof against smut, followed by Joanott-e, Siberian, American Banner, Black Tartarian, and Early Champion in tho ordur named. The Early Champion was quite susceptible to tho disease.
