SCHOOL TEACHERS' APPOINTMENTS.

Sir, —Seeing that your columns havo Intoly been open to question tlio powers of Uio Education Hoards versus Committees in reference to the appointment of teachers, I wish to draw your attention to what took placo under tho Nelson Education Board. They called for applications for headmaster for W'estport District High School. The first application was called under tho 1908 Act, and the board sent down the names of Messrs. Harkness, AYake, M'Neill, and Huntfcr, to tho committee, but owing to an irregularity on the committee's part, tho hoard decided to start do novo. Fresh applications wero called, and included among tho applicants were Messrs. Harkness, M'iNoill, and Hunter. At tho meeting of the board at Heel'ton, when tho question of tho headmaster came up, tho chairman proposed that the name of Mr. Harkness bo the only one sent to the committee, giving as his reasons that the 190!) Act gave tho board power to send name or names of not more than four to the committee, and, after discussion, this was duly carried. So if tho chairman's interpretation of the Act is correct, the teachers need not feci nMrnied/ at what tho school committees will do, as it appears! to me that tlie.v will not always get a clean run from tho boards, seeing that Messrs. M'lN'eill's and Hunter's names wero sent- down to the committee under the 1908 Act, ami holding higher certificates.—l am, etc., COMMITTEEMAN. March 2.
