PENGUIN RELIEF FUND.
Tho following reply has been forwarded by tho'Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, to Mr. John Duncan, M.P. for Wairau, who wrote inquiring into tho circumstances of Mrs. Hannam, tho only female survivor from tho wreck of the Penguin:—"l am in receipt of your 'letter 1 of February .19,' in which you inform nic of tho sad condition in which Mrs. Hannam finds herself as a result of tho recent disastrous wreck of the steamer Penguin. I regret Very much to hear that, in addition to being deprived of hor husband and children, shoiis destitute, and her case is indeed hard. I nbto what you say as to its being a matter in which the Government might grant finan-cial"-assistance, and may say 'that it has already been decided to give a subsidy of £ for £ up to £1000 to tho fund raised by tho 1 public for the relief of sufferers by the wrcck../ This subsidy, I am suro you will agree, is a libbral one." . : In connection with tho Penguin disaster, the; Seamen's Mission people have been collecting, funds for-a.memorial to be placed.in tho church. Tho Missioner, Mr. Moore, Jays that a few pounds moro aro requirdd. Ho expects the memorial to bo placed on tho wall in .'about threo weeks.
