DANNEVIRKE R.C. AUTUMN MEETINC. CONCLUDING DAY'S RESULTS. TANGEROA WINS THE HANDICAP. (BY TELEGItAIMI—SI'EQIAI. REPORTED.) Danrtcvirke, March 11. Tho autumn meeting of the Dannevirko Racing Club was concluded to-day in fine weather, but the attendance was not so largo as on the previous day, and tho totalisator investments suffered in consequence. During tho afternoon tho sum of £6165 was passed through tho machine, making a total of j £13,508 for the two days, which is £5273 less than last year's total. Nino bookmakers wove licensed to-day, eight inside and one outside. For to-day's events the fields were not quite as largo as on the first day, but there wero only two races in which two dividends were not paid. The principal event, tho Autumn Handicap, was won by Tangeroa, after a good linl .h with Sandstream. A sensation was caused by the result of the Juvenile Handicap, as tho winner was not supported to any extent on tho machine, and members of the ring had not written his name for a single bet. At tho conclusion of the Tapuata Hack Welter the stewards held an inquiry into the running of First Mate, as compared with his running in thoiMakirikiri Hack Handicap on the first .day. IBy Gi.encob.] Rosogrove's withdrawal from the Hack Hurdles at Damiovirko left six starters for that event. On the strength of his easy win on the first day, Hipporolla was installed a warm favourite. Any chance which ho had, however, was lost in the first mile, when ho drifted hopelessly to the rear, and, though, lie made up a lot of leeway towards the finish, he was unable to catch the lea.ders. Scenery met Spcciosa on exactly the sumo terms as in the first day's race, and Ihc result was precisely the same as regards this pair, for Speciosa, after leading tight ip to the straight, was caught and beat-en in the last few yards. Scenery put in a wondc.ful finish, and she and her rider were accorded quite an ovation as they returned to thn enclosure. Waikareao, by Misslirc, raced well to the last hurdle, and should prove equal to winning in hack company Icforo long. Of the five starters in the March Handicap, Pluck, who had run second to Vi on the first day, was the public fancy. Hatch was substituted for L. Wilson on the Merriwee mare, but the change did not work any improvement, for I'luck was not in the hunt ct any 6taao. North Head wa.6 iu his Uo6t splkuj-

ing mood, and, jumping off in tho lead, never gave anything else a chance. Mcrrio Rose was left several lengths, and ■ never cm ght tho field. The whole of the eleven acceptors faced tho starter in the Telephone Hack Handicap, lummoriau being tho candidate entrusted with most support, llermia repeated her first day's form, and won from end to end, whilo Inez, another Birkenlioad filly, was second. This was the third win at the mc9ting for representatives ( of Birkenhoad, and others of the imported horso's stock scoured place money on four occasions. First Mate was conceding some of his opponents in the Hack Welter Handicap as much as 291b., but ho was looking in splendid condition, and, having the services of Oliver, he was installed a strong favourite, Mildura being the only other candidate to carry much support. First Mate had rether a bad passage in the first, half of tho journey, but as soon as Olivor lot his head looso in the straight ho made short work of the opposition. Quandary showed a lot of pace- for seven furlongs, and looked like winning at one stage. Ho was slightly lanio <ach day as he came in, but there is apparently nothing seriously amiss with him, and lie should bo returned a winner before long if ho keeps sound. First Mate's running formed the subject of an inquiry, tho result of which lias been stated above. Tho Autumn Handicap looked a really good thing for Sandstream, and it was no surprise to find him carrying more than double tho - support accorded to any other candidate. Hatch rodo a beautiful race on the San Fran gelding until it came to■ tho finish, and then his exhibition was a poor one. On a free mover Hatch is superb, .but it was evident yesterday that, on a sluggish animal, bo rides much too short to get tho uiost out of his mount. Tangeroa, who ran a good race for a mile and a distance in the Cup, ran up to that form, and Young got a break on Sandstream which the latter was unable to reduce in time. Tangaroa has been racing a trifle unluckily since November, and a win for him was slightly overdue. Ho is a useful stayer,'and should account for other good races in his turn. Vi found tho distance just a little too far to-day. Ballyheigh had the services of Jenkins, but he rail badly, and never looked a winnor. ■ Tho Juvenile Handicap provided a rare turn up for tho ring. . Day Beam was favourite, and Latchot, Seraphic,' and Glissade all carried a good deal of money.; Glissade raced with Day Beam till the straight, and then, drawing away, looked to have the race in hand, but Tepuia came with a late run, and just got up on the post. With tho exception of Raupare, she was tho absolute outsider of the field, only nino tickets being opposite her number on tho machine. Tepuia is rather bigger than tho usual run of San Frans, but,, though she scarcely looked thoroughly ready to raco to-day, she strikes one immediately as a good winner of the future. ' .

With only five starters in the Mangatera Hack; betting on that race was not brisk, Aberbrothock being tho chief medium of what commissions were worked. Oliver took matters easy until the straight was reached, when he sent the big three-year-old along, arid won with the greatest ease.

The Cockatoo was considered'to possess a chance second to none in the Kaitoko Welter, hut towards tho close of the betting there was a lot of money for Silken Rein, and she finished up a good second favourite. She commenced moro smartly than anything, and was never in trouble at any part of tho journey. On tho first day she did , not get away well, but was putting in good work at tho end of tho journey and finished fourth. Apparently that race improved her considerably. The Cockatoo was never among the leaders, and finished behind tho first halfdozen. '. ' Winning jockeys at tho meeting were:— A. Oliver, three; F. D. Jones and R. Hatch, two each; D. Watt, C. Price, F. Cress, E. Lowe, L. WilsoiT, W. Kirk, R. Young, F. Coloman, and F. Langstono, one each. Principal winning owners at the meeting were:—Mr. G..P. Donnelly, £250; Mr. D. H.
