(FIIOM OCR SPECIAL RBFORTEII.) HUTT TtlVm BOARD. Tho Hntt River Board met last evening in the Town Hall, Lower Hutt. There wcro present:—Messrs. R. Stephens (chairman), T. W. Pefcrkin, Orton Stevens, Sladden, and Peters. A request for a reduction in rent was put forwanf b.v Messrs. Pifcaithley ant! Company, who pointed out that the board had forbidden I hem to take any moro shingle from two beaches near White's Line. The board resolved to adhero to their former decision in the matter of rent, 'The foreman reported that an extra loom groin, together with a submerged groin, had been completed. At a point of Kingdom's Beach where the river was constantly deepening, two submerged groins had been put in. Good progress was being made with the new diversion cut through the beafch above tho pipe bridge. During tho recent fresh, the boom and submerged groins had done satisfactory work in diverting the river. The foreman was now engaged in removing bad snags and logs in tho river course. Tho low condition of tho river during the past few weeks facilitated tho thorough carrying out of this work, by means of dynamite. ' The engineer (Mr. Laing Meason) reported that when the spoil was required for Jnckson Street Extension, across the western branch of tho river, he proposed to excavate from the new channel, thereby enlarging and iiwravin? tho existing diversion cut. The board's staff was now engagtd excavating a small cut through the accumulation.
On the recommendation of the engineer, the board agreed to grant the contractor for the now pipo and traffic bridge the use of the board's embankment over the western branch for die purpose of carting material to the new bridge. The permission was granted, conditional upon the contractor undertaking to leave the embankment in good order. As a guarantee that attention would be paid to this condition, the board determined to ask tho Wellington City Council to deposit £fj. The board decided to make its annual inspection of tho river works on Monday, March 11. Further information was tendered on the proposal to acquire the Hutt Park Railway, and a very lengthy report submitted by the engineo (Mr. Laing Meason). Ho estimated the cost of relayinif the existing line and extending it across the river as follows;— Relaying lino from Gear Company's works to river, 115 chains, ,£2415; constructing extension across dam and in to the'island, 67 chains, £1511; total, .£3956. Without discussion the board adopted tho report. ' JOTTINGS. As a result of the organ recital given by Mr. W. H. Rennie in St. David's Presbyterian Church, Petone, on Tuesday evening last; the sum of .C 5 will be handed over to the Children's Bread Fund, for which object tho Wellington Churches also are taking up a collection. Mr. F,. P. Bunny, who had decided to contest the forthcoming mayoral election at the
Hutt, will give his initial address in the Lower ITiitt Town Hall on Monday evening.
For having mailo use of obscene language, George Cole, an elderly man, was fined 205., or seven days, at Petone Police Court yesterday morning.' Messrs. W. Inglis and R. W. Short were the presiding justices. A conference was held at. the Petone Technical School last evening between a committee of the Technical School Board, three representatives of the Wellington Education Board, and three members of the Petone School Committee. The subiect of discussion was the proposal to use (.lie neivsTeohnicnl School to accommodate pupils of the District High School. The visitors wero shown round the building, and discussed its suitability for tho purpose. The Technical School Hoard will again discuss the proposal at its meeting next. Tuesday. Some of the members are strongly opposed to granting the new school for the use of District Iligli School puiiils.
