"THE KING'S FIFTY." CAPTAIN KING STILL AHEAD. . TEAMS MATCH AND KYNOCH CUP. THE INVINCIBLE OPAKI MEN. TesteWay, the seventh day of the New Zealand' Rifle Championship Meeting at Trentham, ■was crowded with events.- The final'stage of the "Canterbury "-the last of the, championship series, of matches—was decided on! the 1000 yards mound of the Seddon Range, leaving Capl. W. S. King in tho lead for-the championship m' the " Fifty "; the burning question as to which is the best rifle team in New Zealand was settled decisively in favour of the famous Opaki Rifle Club, the . members' of which appropriated the plums of practically every district prize-list in New. Zealand Zealand throughout the : shooting season; the Kynoch Cup tie was decided in favour of■Rifleinan Moselen, of Kaeo; the "Last Try"—a con-: eolation match for competitors who had not succeeded in winning' .£1 or over during : the meeting, was also fired, but the .results were pot available last evening. FIGHT FOE THE "FiFTT.";' The weather for the'last stages of the Can-: terbury Match could hardly have been better." it times, there was a dead calm,,and at'intervals the flags just : moved in the breath of the gentlest of breezes'. These conditions con-: tinued till about a ; quafter-past ten, : when'. the ' , jririd became uncertain, coquetting and frisking about to some extent. . The result was .the best thousand yards shooting, which has'ever; been put up here. ' >•.';■ ■'■'~ Interest naturally fastened on the. grand- ag-. gregate leaders, Lieut.'Duncan (Millertoh).'.and Corp. Patrick (Auckland), who were second' and third respectively on the aggregate list, were amongst the first to go down, and each put up excellent scores.. Aucklander gained a point on his southern rival,.with a score of U, which included sis bull's-eyes, and both f men were then pegging level for'the Championship with;.4sl points each. Meantime, Guy (Kα-'' ponga) also improved his position a point,'and, until Capt. Ifing went down; .was runner-up tothe Auckland nnd Millerton champions. ■ Guy. ehot in almost a dead calm. Captain' King Shows his Mettle. - : A crowd gathered:to watch Capt.:King';; The' veteran has many admirers, but there is ; .a : - general opinion'that both '*Corp. Patrick and ' Captl Duncan will make him: fire all- he knows to keep his lead to the end. Yesterday, the" captain was equal to the occasion, and he gave such an impression of coolness, skill, and judgment, that he left the mound a firmer favourite' than ever. There was a sort of chip-chop breeze when he commenced, but, in spite of that, his sighting shot was a bull. The elevation was Bplendiu, but the. vagaries of the breeze, with the continuous changes in the adjustment' of the-rifle;'made it''impossible to say>'T>'heth'6r skill or lnck.had sent in the first shot so successfully. The captain followed' his sighter with a magpie, followed by an inner. He then . found the black disc, and fired in two bull's-, eyes. Just as he was about to fire his fifth snot, a' puff of wind, which had been formerly frisking from'the east, whisked' back, - and. caught the veteran'napping, and to the dismay of his backers he ■ missed the target, and a challenge to the markers made things ■Uβ bet-' ; ter. His next shot was fired during a slight haze, and he registered an inner. His total score was then 432, and to equal Patrick and , Duncan he had to make 19 in his> final four shots.. To beat them he had to make four consecutive bull's-eyes. It was interesting to' see the veteran setting his skill. against the \ elements,' which threatened;to destroy his reputation, changing 'his sight as the breeze blew first one way and then another, and firing before the gusts could charge back at him. Almost as quickly as he fired, the target was lowered, with the spotter showing a bull's-eye for every shot, and amidst some_,applause the captain rose from the ■ mound - with an aggr'e-. gate of 452 points, or one point more than his redoubtable rivals, Corp. Patrick and Lieut. Duncan.
Amongst: those' who vastly improved their positions was Private E. Murphy (Newton , Rifles), who won ths Canterbury Match,' and finished up his thousand-yards rango with the fine score of 48. By this performance" he raised his position from twenty-ninth place to eighth. Sergeant Needham (Palmerston North) went, up from twenty-fifth to twelfth;, Rifleman'Soper (Tua'Marina) and Tarr fell about four places— eixth- and seventh to' tenth and eleventh respectively; Private Sorenson. (Auckland) fell from fourteenth to fiftieth; Col.-Sergt.:Ching (Nelson) went up from twelfth to seventh. Corporal M'Connell (Christchurch) crept' up" from eighth to sixth; Sergeant Hadfield-(Blenheim) from seventeenth to ninth. -..The first twelve should be a very, tough lot .to. defeat.for the championship. ' ''; . '■. ... An Ex-champion's Hard Luck.' Rifleman Milroy, ei-champion, experienced "the slings and arrows of outrageous-fortune" when firing at {lie thousand-yards rango in the Canterbury Match. The light .was a little hazy.and his sighter was a miss/ He followed this up by firing at and placing a bull's-eye'.on the target next to his own. He finished ivith a score of 40 (aggregate 132), his position being thirty-eighth in tho list. Had ho placed" the' tull's-ey-i on his own target, his aggregate would have been' 437, which would have given him sixteenth position.. ,The five points' difference dropped him twenty-two places. Ten Bulls at 1000 Yards. Sergeaat Montgomery, Port Chalmers, yesterday put on ten bull's-eyes at 1000 yards. His sighter waj a bull, and then he missed the target. He then rattled on nine consecutive bulls. That ended his score for competitive purposes, but to see what he really could do, he tired another shot, and scored another bull'seye. : Early in the meeting the same marks•nan mis-sighted at , tho 800 yards ranjje of tho .Nelson Match, and scored only, six points. The "Canterbury" Scores. No "possibles" lit up the final of the "Canterbury." The long range--1000 yards—and the uncertain wind causing, a heavy fall in "bull's.' .
