MELBOURNE CUP PRIZE OF £4000. Auckland, March 10. A peculiar case is reported from • Ngaruawahia, where an old man named M'Donald, familiarly known as "Old Mac." throughout the Waipa, died some time ago ncar,Ngaruawahia without friends or relatives,, in the country, and to all appearances without any money' or property whatever. The local constable, while going over the few effects which tho old man left, found some papers, amongst which was a ticket for tho winner of a recent Melbourne Cup, carrying with it a prize of £4000. Nothing is known of whore M'Donald eamo from, or whethor ho had relatives or friends, so that, though tho money can ho secured, tho question is. to whom is it to go? BREACH OF PROMISE. Timaru, March 10. . In the District Court to-day, an, action was heard before District Judge Haselden and a special jury, in which Ruth Bcnbow, daughter of a small farmer at Temuka, claimed from Robert John Edgar, a young farmer, £500 damages for breach of promise of marriage. The couple became engaged in 1904, but tho defendant br'oko off the engagement, in October last, only to renew it a fortnight later. Finally ho refused to marry the plaintiff. 'Die principal reason given for the breach was that tho girl was "too quiet." Tho jury awarded £200 damages.
