LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL
An ordinary meeting of the Htitt Borough Council was held last evening, and attended by Councillors Peterkin (Mayor), Russell Ward, O'Sullivan, Hodges, Wild-Smith, Hughes, Ross, and Baldwin. In reply to a letter from Messrs. Bell, Gully, and Myers for Mr. Riddiford, in reference to the Middlemarch Drain, it was resolved to have a plan prepared showing the area proposed, to be drained. A letter from Mr. E. P. Rishworth concerning the depositing of road sweepings upon a vacant section adjoining his premises in Aglionby Road caused Councillor Russell to comment on- the absence of fences from two other sections liable to become nuisances in Bridge Street, which was contrary to the by-laws. It was resolved to call upon the owners of the three sections to fence them.
Messrs. Skerrett and Wylie wrote that Mrs. Duff's solicitor had informed them that he will not tako any action to have their caveat removed, and that the council will therefore have to take action before March 22 to prove their claim to the land.
It was resolved to consult with the solicitor of the River Board, whose interests wore identical, with a view to joint action. Tho report of the No. 2 Committee, which was adopted, contained tho following clauses: —"That the engineer bo instructed to put in the necessary mains, etc., to light the Melling Bridge with two arc lamps, at a cost not exceeding £70. "Tho committee are to inspect Main and Downers Streets, etc., with a view to reporting as to the advisability of removing the street lamp near Downer Street to the corner of that street, as suggested by residents by petition. "The committee, having carefully considered the by-law re horses straying on footpaths, and perused the Wellington city by-laws on the subject, are , of opinion that tho council's Miscellaneous By-law, 1905, sufficiently provides for dealing with this matter. The question at issue in the last clause was as to' whether the by-law concerning horses not in charge applied to a mob of horses driven along the footpath and cycle track." The clauses were approved. The same committee recommended the adoption of- a by-law regulating vehicular traffic on the Melling Bridge to weights of two tons; forbidding tho use of the bridge to any cattle, sheep, or horses, except horses attached to vehicles; forbidding any vehicle to follow another vehicle closer than 100 feet; and restrictive speed to four, miles an hour. Subject to revision by the council's solicitor, the by-law was approved.
