AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

WELLINGTON CHAMPIONSHIPS. Among tho entries received for the W.A.A.O. autumn sports carnival on tho Basin Resqrvo next Saturday are those of E. J. Williams, the crack Wanganui sprint and middle-distance runner, E. Mculi, a prominent sprinter from tho same town, and T. Stubbs, of Palmerston North, one time the crack mark sprinter of Wellington, and who, prior to taking up his rosidenco in Palmerston, had a successful season on the' running tracks in England. In one of his runs in the Old Country ho was timed to do 100 yards in 10 l-sscc. Stubbs and Williams arc to meet J. Wilton, Wellington provincial champion, and probably E. E. Fisher, holder of the 220 yards New Zealand championship, in a trial race over 440 yards to decide which of the quartette is to represent Wellington at tho Now Zealand championship meeting' on March 20. The entries throughout are numerous, and the handicaps,.which were issued yesterday, give promise of exceptionally close finishes. The scratch men in all the events are performers of note, and many of them are present New Zealand champions and ex-cham-pions. Among these are Sliarpo, Burge, M'Kay, and W.. J. Pollo»k, while the high standard of the other entrants is guaranteed by the presence among them of Goodbehere, Evenson, and Wilton, all Wellington provincial champions, Ounuinghame, Bridge, Burdekin, and others of the same calibre. In the walking events Fitzgerald's performance will constitute a championship trial, as upon the times ho records will depend his inclusion in the Wellington team. A spice of originality will be given to the occasion by the addition to the programme of wrestling bouts, which are in course of preparation between representatives of the Police and Permanent Forces.
