A serious fire occurred at Palmerstoii about 1 o'clock this morning, iivo business placet being destroyed. Tlio sbops occupied by Sir. J. H. Appleby, fancy goods and photographer, and by Mr. E. L. Burt, baker and confectioner, were, with contents, completely destroyed. Th« former shop ivas owned by Lawson's Estate, and tho latter by Mr. Jas. Arkle, of Dunedin. Mr. Crisp's solicitor's office (owned by Lawson's Estate), Dalgoty's store, and tho Government Stock Inspector's office wero also destroyed, but the contents wero saved. Tho fire started in Applcb>;!s shop, but there is 110 cluo as to its origin. The water was turned off at the reservoir, and an hour elapsed before it was available. Most of the members of tho Firo Brigade wore away at Auckland. Nothing is yet available as to insurances.
