Cahled advice received by tho local agents of tho Shaw, Savill and Albion Co. reports that tho steamer Matatua arrived in London last Thursday aftornoon. Sho left Wellington on January 19. THE WAIMATE. On Thursday tho New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Waimate arrived in Auckland from London direct. The vessel has a large cargo for Auckland, and after discharging thcrocomes pn to Wellington, being duo hero about tho end of next week. A PROSPEROUS COMPANY. The Howard Smith Company, Limited, have issued their report and accounts for 1908, showing a net profit of £60,070, which compares with £32,041 for 1907, £31,759 for 1906, and £34,912 for 1905. To tho not profit, £60,070, is added balance brought forward, £18,188. making a total of £78,259. Dividends (including interim dividends) are declared, equivalent to 5 per cent., on cumulative preference shares, and 15 per cent, on ordinary shares, absorbing £47,602, and the balance, £30,656, is carried forward. Tho whole of the issued shares are now fully paid up, and tho captial consists of £250,000 in cumulative preference shares, and £250,000 in ordinary shares, or a total of £500,000. Adding fund for depreciation, replacements, renewals, insurance, equalisation of dividends, and contingencies, £365,245; debts due by tho company, £134,560; and profit and loss balance, £55,404, the balance-sheet total is £1,055,298. Assets include steamers and plant at cost, £654,698;.5hares in other companies, at cost, £196,681; and other items. As compared with a year ago, steamers and plant show an increase of £41,042, and the fund for depreciation, etc., an increase of £22,538. BARQUE DALSTON AT LYTTELTON. AN OLD TRADER. Tho barque Palston, which arrived at Lyttelton on Monday from Bunbury, has 298,944 ft. of jarrah timber for Lyttelton and 317,654 ft. for Dunedin, where sho goes to complete dischnrging. She was built in 1853, ana in her early days she was known as the Scimitar, but after trading under that name for some years she was purchased by the New Zealand Shipping Company, and was employed for many years iii the emigrant and cargo trade between London and New Zealand. In those daye eho was justly regarded ns one of the "crack" ships in the trade, and ranked with the Turakina as the largest ship in tho company's fleet. The vessel was commanded for some time by Captain Fox, who was succeeded by Captain Milmnn, a wellknown master, who hold command of tho Rongitikci for many years. The vessel had a very successful career in the London-New Zealand trade, and made many smart passages both outward and nomeward. She carried many hundreds of emigrants from London to Now Zealand ports, and there are doubtless many living in the Dominion to-day who caught their first.sight of New Zealand from the decks of the Rangitikci. In tho late "eighties" and early "nineties" tho New Zealand Shipping Company "went in" for 'steamers, and disposed of their sailing ships, and the Hansitikei passed into other hands. She was still a full-rigged ship, but her namo was altered to Dalston, under which she traded in many parts of the ■ world, still under the British flag. A few years ago, however, she was sold to Norwegian owners, and her rig was sold to that of a barque. WOOL FREIGHTS FROM AUSTRALIA. "Fair Play," an English shipping journal, says:-A fight is at present going on amongst shipowners in the trade from Australia. At tho opening of tho season it was agreed that the freight on wool for the season should bo 9-16 of a penny per lb. The M'Arthur Shipping and Agency Company made arrangements for six of tho Clan Lmo steamers, and mads a bid for tho trade from Australia to this country, with the result that freights have been reduced to id. a lb. As each sixteenth of a penny per lb. represents Is. 10d. on every bale shipped, it will bo seen that the shipowners are receiving 9s. 2d. per bale less than the aereed rate at the commencement of the season, and as some of the vessels in the trade carry as many an 24,000 bales the cut in freights means a loss of over £10,000 in the receipts of a Homeward voyage from Australia on boats of this size. But I understand that wiser counsels have now prevailed amongst tho English lines, and that rates have been restored to a higher level. The International Mercantile Marino Company, however, arc, I am told, quoting a lower rato for cargo for Australia from Now York than the English linos, uotwitstanding tho fact that their vessels first bring tho goods from New York to Liverpool and then tranship them to Australia. While the disturbance in rates existed it was perhaps difficult to fix responsibility on tho Wlnto Star branch of tbo combine for bringing American goods to England and forwarding them from Liverpool to Australia in tho same steamer which carries British goods but charging a much lower rate on the American goods {rom New York to Australia than is charged on the British goods from Liverpool. Except for the purpose of favouring American shippers there is now, however, no justification for tin? action on the part of the American company, which ran only prejudice Knglish shippers who doal in similar eoode from this oountry. ■ >
