PATEA TRADE. Eyes in Australia are evidently on Patea, as on other places, for the "Sydney Commercial News" has the following:—"The state of affairs at Patea ,is causing not a little anxiety to', shippers and exporters. Tho sheds ht Patea aro full of wool, hides, and othor produce, and there has been for a considerable time only one vessel, tho Aorere, to cope with tho trade. The Patea Shipping Company have three vessels for the trade, tho Mana, Kapiti, and Arapawa, but the Mana has been the only one able to work the port. If any Australian firm has a small vessel that they may want to make a good profit out of, th'cro is a golden opportuity at present."

LIFE-SAVING APPLIANCES. ' An English exchango reports that a circular ! has just been issued by the Hoard of Trade relative to fillips' boats and lifc'savine appliances. The following may be qiioted from it, because it gives rise ' to an interesting thought or two: "Attention is called to the fact that the boats, life-buoys, life-belts, and other life-saving appliances on board all ships must be kept bo as to be at all times -fit and ready for use, and that a heavy penalty is incurred under Section 430 of tho Merchant Shipping. Act, 1894, when this is not done. Tho master of a British ship was recently fined the maximum penalty of £50 for failing to comply with this Section. To ensure that tfie appliances are always ready, for use, it is necessary that tho boats should be regularly swung out, put into the water and exercised, and that tho life-belts and buoys should be frequently examined."

PILLAGING OABGCI IN SYDNEY. Pays the "Sydney.Commercial News":—We have frequently drawn attention to tho remarkably lenient punishment our local magistrates impose on persons found guilty of pillaging from a vessel l or wharf, and at tho same, time pointed out that unless offenders wero dealt, with more severely it was hardly likely that the practice would ever be stopped. Notwithstanding the warning, tho authorities at first continued on in the same mild manner, but have apparently at last arrived at tho conclusion that our .view is correct, and dccided to make moro stringent efforts to put down the evil. Tho alteration in methods came under notice the otlier day, when two men, who had been caught in the act of breaking open a case on a. vessel discharging at Sydney, wero brought up for punishment,. Tho magistrate addressed them in no mild manner by pointing out that this class of robbery is the worst, for they received good wages, and were well treated. He then imposed a sentence of three months' imprisonment without the option of a fine.. When it is considered that the shipping companies suffer losses extending into thousands of pounds annually at the hands of this class of thief it will be generally agreed that tho punishment is just, and wo do not hesitate in stating that the case now dealt with will prove a deterrent to others who indulge in the practice which is bringing Sydney into unenviable repute. '

A BMAET VOYAGE. An exceptionally fast voyage was mado between San Francisco and Newcastle by tbo fourmasted barque Lucigard, which arrived there on Suuday, February 14. Tlio vessel accomplished the trip in thirty-five days. In latitude 26dci?. she fell in with the north-east trade winds, and reached the eauator in eighteen days. At times the barquo made from 15 to lfi knots, and her best day's sailings were 355, MO, and 300 knots in the twentv-four hours. Captain Jlenk is in command. The French barque Ernilio GiUinc. under charier to load wheat for the United Kingdom or Continent, arrived at Sydney on February 15 from San Frnnci?co in ballast, after a' fast run of thirty-seven days. She carried fresh favourable winds throughout the voyage. THE-SYDNEY BOAT. Bather later than usual the Union Company's turbino steamer Maheno arrived in port from Sydney yesterday afternoon, and was berthed about 5 p.m. She left Sydney at 2.12 p.m. last Saturday, and on the run across tho Tasman Sea experienced moderate easterly and light variable winds, with smooth seas till arrival. The list of imports for Wellington by tho Maheno shows the following items:—Rice, 1080 sacks, slue, 95 sacks, 301 packages tea, <130 sacks maize, COO cases salmon, 200 cases soap, tobacco. 9 cases, 1320 sacks sugar, 380 cases schnapps, 70 eases currants, 565 sacks flour, 70 sacks manures, 211 casks ricemeal, 22 pieces timber, 474 and 4 crates melons, 253 cases fruit, 83 cases paper, 86 cases sultanas, 159 drums carbide, 165 cases sardines. Transhipment ex Ortona, Nardou, Marioo, Moldavia, Aorangi, Changsha, Armand, Bchie, Eastern, Apolda, Fred de Grosse, Yorelte. Prinz Sicismuud, Tasmanic, Offenbach. Quantity sundries. The Maheno leaves Wellington this afternoon for Melbourne, via southern j;orts and llobart. The Union Company's turrct ; deck steamer ICoromiko leaves Westport at 9 p.m. to-morrow for Melbourne. It is expected that the Union Company's steamer- Kotuku will bo placed on tlio slip tomorrow for overhaul ana survey. Last night tho Maoriland Company's steamer Holmdnle wasi fixed to leave Greymoutli for Tiuiaru with a cargo of timber. It was expected that tho Union Company's steamer Poherua would leave Greymoutli last night for Wellington with a cargo of coal. The Maoriland Company's steamer Lauderdale left Wellington yesterday for Greymouth, where she will lift a cargo of timber for Melbourne. Mr. W. Paul, late third officer of tho Maori, joined tho Maheno in a similar capacity yesterday. Mr. Gauiiaway also joined the Maheno as assistant purser.: Sheep from Pelorus Sound are coming by the Anchor. Lino steamer Alexander, which is duo hero this morning.- She is making three trips to load sheep at tho Sounds, and they will all be lajided at Petonc. Tho "Pacific Marino Keview" says that, notwithstanding public protest and agitation throughout Japan to reduce present steamship subventions, it seems that tho Japanese Government have determined to maintain tho same. In fact, it is reported that they will bo actually increased by 1,500,000 dols. Tho position is briefly this: The Japanese nation is so deeply involved in its present steamship services that it cannot withdraw without danger of a collapse.
