At last night's meeting of tho Onslow Borough Council, eulogistic references were mado to tho Town Clerk (Mr. Henry Abraham) and tho Borough Engineer (Mr. Clnpcott), and tho council unanimously decided to grant each oilicer an immediate increase of salary. Sir. T. E. Donne, general manager of tho Tourist Department, is slowly recovering from his indisposition. It was Mr. Donno's intention to return to Wellington early this week, but his medical attendant. Mr. Samuel Rout, aai old resident of Auckland, is at present on a short visit to Wei-, lington. He has boon associated since 1877 with tho well-known work of tho Scripture Gift Association in tho northern _ province, and tho Trust Board of tho Association thinks that somo of its benefits might bo extended to Wellington. Mr. Rout is hero for a few days to carry out that purpose, for which aid is requirod. His address is "care of Trocadero, Lambton Quay." Messrs. G. G. Wilson and M'Lean, of tha Accountancy Branch of tho Railway Department, who aro retiring on superannuation, woro yesterday tho recipients of presentations from their fellow-officers. Mr. Wilson's presonts took the form of a marble elook, cutlery, and a handsome pipo. The presentations made to Mr. M'Lean consisted of a gold grannio chain and a set of gold sleevelinks and studs, Mr. Davidson, chief, accountant, who mado tho presentations, spoke highly of tho qualities of the _ two gentlemen, and expressed regret at'their departure. Messrs. Wilson wid M'Lean havo been connected with tho Railway Department for 35 and 30 years respectively.

A cablo message from London stated that Mr. Henry Saint George will again conduct tho Trinity Collego music examinations _ in New Zealand. Mr. Saint George, a violinist, composer, arid writer on musical subjects, is a son of Mr. Georgo Saint George, tho composer of violin music, and ho is tho author of several musical works, and edited the "Strad" for four years. Mr. Saint Goorgo is an acknowledged authority on tho history of ancient instruments, and, in conjunction with his father, introduced three _ hitherto unknown works of Bach to tho British public, being tho first to givo a recital solely of Bach's music in England. ■

The Sydney Central Methodißt Mission com* mitteo lias decided to appoint Mr. James Gilmour, of London, to an important position on tlio mission staff. As Colonel Gilmour, of the Salvation Army, Mr. Gilmour was' associated with Army work in Sydney as' fai back as 1884. Ho later on was appointed to the charge of the work in New Zealahd. Still later, a special office of trust was mado for him at the headquarters in Melbourne. Afterwards ho was transferred to London, "where ho was appointed'ono of three to whom was given the charge of the important inter* national affairs of tlio Army. For family rea< sons he has found it necessary to return to Australia, and has therefore resigned from, the Army. Ho will take up his work at the C.M.M. headquarters early this month.
