HUTT AND PETONE NEWS

(from oun special itEronTEU.) .+ ( HUTT RIVER CARNIVAL. Swimming, as a popular local sport, was greatly benefited at Lower Hutt last November, when a dressing shed, platform, and diving-board were provided by publje subscription. Where facilities for swimming exist, there must necessarily bo races, and evidence of this spirit of rivalry was given on Saturday afternoon. There is no swimming club at tho Hutt as yet, : and tho carnival, which was held just above the HiUt Bridge, was arranged by half a dozen of tho moro enthusiastic swimmersj who wished to further the sport. To their appeal for trophies, they found a generous response, and some valuable prizes were presented by .wellknown residents. Thero were fivo events, and competition was keen in all of them. Tho races were held On a courso from the dressing-shed down past tho bridge, on which several hundred people had assembled. Besides the swimming and diving contests, there were also exhibitions of high and fancy diving, and ono of tho races was an "all cloths on" event. Messrs. Burns, Tocker, and Trevethick caused something of a sensation by diving from tho bridgo into only a few feet of water. Tho officials were:— Judges, Messrs. A. A. Somerville and H. E. Anderson; starter, Mr. F. Jenness; committeo, Messrs. E. Alexander, H. Alexander, \V. Bond, A. H. Tocker, F. Silver, and D. Jenkins. The success of tho carnival was due almost, entirely to tho efforts of Messrs.
