AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

BENEFIT SPORTS MEETING. j Under the auspices of tho Tort Nicholson Amateur Athletic Club, a benefit sports meeting was held on tho Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon, which resulted in the collection of about .MO in aid of tho Wellington Hospital funds. Tho officials of the day were:—Referee, Mr. It. W. M'Villy; stewards, Messrs. H. E. Nicholls, E. A! Dawson, and J. T. Webber; track judges. Messrs. A. Davies, M. Burnett, and n. S. Robinson; field judges, Messrs. W. J. Hcenan, G. S. lionaldson, J. Doyle, 11. Hogan, and W. H. .Tones; walking judge, Mr. 'IVW. Leslie; timekeepers, Messrs. J. 11. Pollock, W. Tucker, S. Robinson, and A. Laurenson; starter, Mr. T. \V. Leslie; clerk of course, Mr. A. Marryatt; Marshall, Mr. W. Coffey; press stewards, Messrs. B. Roberts and F. Roberts; result board, Messrs. J. J. Callaghan and B. A. Guise; call stewards, Messrs. F. Brace, J. W. Heenan, 11. fiummerhayes, M. Mulcahy; number steward, Mr. A. Edwards; marksmen, Messrs. 11.I 1 . Crewes ■ and L. W. Cozens. A programme of about 23 events was got off, and everything passed without a hitch, the gathering being probably' tho most successful held for a long time. Tho weather was perfect, a light southerly keeping the air cool, and there was an attendance of about 1000 sj f ctators. All tho events were very interesting, and some were notable for remarkably close finishes. Woodger's win in tho 100 Yards Fundicnp was well deserved, and was the result of a brilliant effort. Two events that aroused the keenest interest, were the boxing contests, in which very creditable displays were given by tho youthful performers. The first oro was between Laurie M'Randall (13 years, 4st. ?,lb.) and Ralph M'Randall (11 years, Ist. IMb.), pupils of Mr. J. Gosling, and tho other between H. Thornton (!)st. 21b.) and .T. Morgan (Bst. 61b.), pupils of Mr. B. Dovey, Wellington Physical Training School. Both events wero under the direction of the Wellington Boxing Association. Tho officials are to bo coxjratulated on the success of tho meeting, ,i:id they, and particularly the press stewards, deserve a word of thanks for their ready assistance to the press representatives.
