Wheatley will bo favourably remombered hero by his splendid running j hen on tour with the Duftey-Shrubb combination. 1 ( The cablo recently informed us of the suspension of se\eral American athletes, on the ground that they had broken the rules relating to professionalism, and their subsequent reinstatement.- Tho London "Sportsman ' has some caustic comments to offer It says—"Thus ends what may accurately bo described as a nine-days' wonder, It was on December 29 that the Registration Committee of the American Athletic Union suspended tho six athletes indefinitely. Four of them had competed in tho recent Olympic Games in London, and tho charges as regards , Sheppard, Porter, and Bacon were for taking exorbitant expenses for participating in ovents at Buff alo and Bellars for receiving 'appearance monov' at athletic gatherings Only a couple of tho half-dozen— Bonhag and Bacon—condescended to appear before tho committee,..Bonhag..,admitting that he had receivedrarif'order.'on. a jewellery firm for CO'dollars" for'a 'second prize, for which tho legal limit.is : 20, dollars, Porter, although not .-in"', attendance for ex-

amination, wrote that it was not to bo expected that a busy man was going to leavo his business and travel many miles without receiving proper compensation in 'recreation and sport" (sic). Ho therefore took six days' holiday for tho jaunt from Philadelphia, viz., Friday evening till the following Thursday. The Metropolitan Association of tho A.A.U., through' Mr. Obertubcssiiig, mado a big parade of tho fact that they had diligently pursued'a course of inquiry, with the result that they felt certain that several athletes had been receiving money beyond what might be termed 'logitimato expenses.' They also boldly denounced tho demands by professional coaches and trainers for 'appearance money' for tho participation of notable athletes in matches, and threatened serious penalties. Now, after a parade of virtuous desiro' to purge tho Augean staJble tho Registration Committee—on what evidence we aro unable as yet to say—have whitewashed tho half-dozen, and they aro henceforth once moro to bo regarded as •pure amateurs.'"
