INTENTIONS OF THE GOVERNMENT. AN AMENDMENT DEFEATED. (BT TSl.ECirurtt—l'ltEsm kBSOCUTION—COPtEianT.) (Rec. February 23, 11.30 p.m.) London, February 23. In the House of Commons Mr, A. Pollhy'a amendment to the Addrcss-in-R-cply in favour of the introduction of a Bill deajing with the veto of : the House of Lords this session was negatived by 225 votes to 47.
Mr. Asquith doscribedthe amendment' as equivalent to a vote of censure, and urged that the pledges given for the session, including the financial proposals, must be honoured. The contemplated change involved a dissolution', and the issue would be submitted to the country at the earliest opportunity, consistent with the discharge of the Government's obligations regarding social reform.'
Mr. Balfour declared that the Government was brave in nothing but words. They were conscious that the .country was not behind them. '
The minority consisted of Liberals, Nationalists, and members of the Labour party.
