SWIMMING.

I WELLINGTON CLUB'S CARNIVAL. '• HEALY PUTS UP ANOTHER RECORD. ■The Wellington Swimming Club was>favoured with perfect weather for its fourteenth annual carnival, which .was held at the' To Aro Baths on Saturday.afternoon. A choppy northerly sea, however, was ruining in tho harbour, but tho-improvements to the'haths havo-progressed so far that, the sea in the harbour had very little effect on the sports. The principal events of the afternoon were tho heats for the 440 yards handicap. In the first, heat Delaney and Crawford stood .put by .themselves when; the. business end was neared, but, at this stage, Watson and Arthur, asserted themselves. From 300 yards on Arthur was out in front, and he eventually finished about. 20 yards . before his opponents. Delaney and Watson had a hard tussle for second.place, the former gaining the verdict. The great event of the. afternoon was the second heat of trie 440, in. which.Healy was giving such men as Freyberg Bsec., Ward 70sec, and Wilton 60sec. The limit men,' who had 90sec., had completed the first 100 Healy left the board, but once , the champion ..got going he soon began to bridge the gap between himself and the limit men. Particular interest attached, to the race between Healy and'Freyberg, and the former's attempt to break his , own New Zealand record for the distance. At:the end of the first hundred yards there wag little difference between, the two champions, but Healy pulled up on his opponent at the turn. The next.so yards saw the New Zealand champion decrease Freyberg's. lead, and by the time. 200' yards had: .been left behind Freyberg only.; had .a lead of about, 4ft. At tho end of-the succeeding 25 yards Healy had drawn level with the Swifts clubman, and the two swam together for the , next stretch, turning : together. .Frey.berg-took a bad course in the next 50 yards' Tap, and had to turn in at the. northern steps to get a kick off, but 'even allowing for the Wellington man's erratic course, Healy was getting through the water faster, and he had a lead of;fully:'loft.at the 350. yards turn. The back-markers, who had been dropping behind as each lap was covered, were not in it in the final 150 yards, with the exception of Ward; a promising young swimmer, who gave Healy a great race home in tho final 40 yards. Healy and Ward turned into tho final stretch together, and. it was anticipated that the champion would leave his youthful opponent, ■but such was not.the case. ".Ward answered the, challenge thrown at him, and the final stretch was swum stroke for stroke, Healy ust.winning on the , post by a touch. Froy-. berg,;who had plugged along at' a great : rate, finished third, about 20ft. behind Healy and' Ward. 'When it was announced that the New- Zealand record of (imin. 8.3-ssec. had been'lowered by.Gsec. by Healy, the spectators applauded vigorously to show their appreciation of the champion's fine effort. Tho -final of.the.race was postponed, and will:be swum at'the Tβ Aro Bath's this evening. Tho 100 yards President's Handicap resulted in a creditable win for H. Ashford off scratch. At the end of the, first 50' yards Ashford did not appear-to have a chance, but ho tackled the limit men in the final stretch, and won a great .race; by about CfV from M'Lcod. J. Mawby, accounted for the Ladies' Bracelet, outting' out; the final' in the good time of 29 3-ssec., Bridge, of ;Wanganui, swimming a good' second.' -The:'feature-of this '•■ race was the' fifth .'heat, in which .Fred. Roberts, the scratch man, won by 'sfti;after;a great effort,, and established a record for the baths by covering the distance' in the excellent time ■0f:.28 4-ssec.' Tho'so yards Maiden resulted in a struggle between Neal and Delaney, the former getting the.verdict by about 4ft. The 200' yards Schoolboys' '.Relay Race was won by tho.Clydo'Quay boys. At the end of the first 100 yards the Terrace lads had a big ead, but Rutiedge, the next Clyde Quay boy,-; narrowed the lead, and the final 'boy, : Scott, although he did not appear to have •much, chance when. he ; left the .board, over-. haujed his opponent, and, swimming in fine, style', landed liis team winners yby fully ,7 yards, ';.,A .lifMaving....competition,.. and.a balloon race, and a..water .polo.match varied, the-procedure.-•' Officers for the carnival were hs; follow :— RefcreerrHoji. •J.
